Champions Start Fast, Hull City Shock Man United as Matchweek One Delivers Early Drama

Arsenal open their title defence with a routine win, three promoted sides pick up shock results, and Brighton sit top of an early Premier League table that will look very different in a few weeks.

The 2026/27 Premier League season is finally under way, and Matchweek One did exactly what opening weekends are supposed to do: it handed out a few surprises, confirmed a few suspicions, and left every fanbase in the country with something to argue about before a ball is even kicked in Matchweek Two.

Arsenal, back at the top of English football for the first time in over two decades, opened their defence of the title in the manner expected of champions, while further down the country three of the Premier League's newly promoted clubs served early notice that they will not simply make up the numbers this season.

How Matchweek One Played Out

Arsenal got the season rolling on Friday night at the Emirates, brushing aside newly promoted Coventry City 3–0 in front of their own fans to open the defence of their crown in comfortable fashion. It was the kind of assured, unspectacular win title-winning sides are supposed to produce against opponents fresh out of the Championship.

Saturday brought the shocks. Hull City, playing their first top-flight fixture in nine years, beat Manchester United 2–0 at home, a result that will sting United's dressing room far more than it flatters Hull's. Elsewhere on the day, Everton eased past Crystal Palace 2–0, Ipswich Town edged a tight one 2–1 against fellow promoted side Sunderland, and Leeds United claimed a narrow 1–0 win at Nottingham Forest. The pick of Saturday's results, though, belonged to Brentford, who put four goals' worth of intent into a comprehensive 3–0 win over a toothless Tottenham Hotspur — a result Spurs boss Thomas Frank will want to forget quickly.

Sunday's fixtures kept the goals coming. Brighton & Hove Albion put on the most eye-catching performance of the weekend, thumping Aston Villa 4–0 at the Amex to sit top of the embryonic table. Manchester City needed a late goal to see off a stubborn Bournemouth side 2–1, while Newcastle United and Liverpool shared the spoils in a 2–2 draw at St James' Park that had goals at both ends and plenty of late tension.

The final match of the round — Fulham against Chelsea — is still to be played, with Xabi Alonso taking charge of his first competitive fixture as a Premier League manager on Monday night.

Three promoted clubs, three different stories — but only one has taken maximum points into Matchweek Two.

Premier League Table After Matchweek One

Chelsea and Fulham are still to play their opening fixture, so the two sides sit at the foot of the table on zero points despite not having lost. Here is how everyone else lines up:

It is worth the usual caveat this early in the season: one round of fixtures rarely tells the full story. Brighton's fast start owes plenty to catching an Aston Villa side who were nowhere near their best, and last season's serial strugglers can just as easily turn into this season's surprise package, or vice versa. Still, for three of the promoted clubs — Hull City, Ipswich Town, and Leeds United — taking six points from a possible six across their combined efforts is about as good a start as anyone could have hoped for.

Talking Points From the Opening Weekend

Manchester United's alarm bells

Losing to a newly promoted Hull City side on the road is the sort of result that follows a club around for weeks. Manager Michael Carrick did not hide his frustration afterwards, and pressure will build quickly if performances do not improve before the next international break.

Tottenham's rout at Brentford

A 3–0 away defeat on the opening day is a harsh way to start life under any new-look squad, and head coach Thomas Frank was blunt in admitting his side were simply not ready for the physical, direct approach Brentford brought to the game.

The promoted clubs are not making up the numbers

Hull City, Ipswich Town, and Leeds United all won on the opening weekend — a rare feat for a promoted trio and a reminder that the gap between the Championship and the Premier League continues to narrow.

The standout fixture of the round is unquestionably Aston Villa against Arsenal on Monday night, as the reigning Europa League champions host the Premier League title-holders at Villa Park in front of the Sky Sports cameras. Manchester United, still smarting from their opening-day defeat, will look to steady the ship at home to Ipswich Town, while Chelsea's first match of the season away to Brighton doubles as an early test for a Blues side still finding its feet under new management.
