Who We Are and How to Contact Us

This notice explains how The Bureau Journal handles personal information in connection with its website, reader correspondence and available subscription or interactive features. The Bureau Journal is a digital news publication based in Abuja, Nigeria.

For privacy questions or requests concerning your personal information, email info@thebureaujournal.com with the subject Privacy Request. For news submissions and editorial corrections, use news@thebureaujournal.com.

The information involved depends on how you interact with the site and which features and third-party services are enabled. Sections describing optional services apply when those services are in use; they do not mean that every feature is available to every visitor.

Information Provided by You

When you contact us, we receive the details you choose to provide, such as your name, email address, telephone number, message, article reference and supporting documents. If you subscribe to an available email service, we receive the subscription details and preferences you submit.

If comments or contributor submissions are enabled, the content and associated account or moderation information may be processed. Information you submit for public posting may become visible to other readers. Do not put private contact details or sensitive information into a public comment.

We do not require readers to send identity documents simply to read public articles. For a data-rights request, we may need proportionate information to verify identity or authority before releasing or changing personal information.

Technical Information and Purposes

Website delivery and security services may process technical information such as IP address, request time, browser or device details, requested pages, referrer and error logs. Enabled analytics, advertising and embedded-media services may also process online identifiers, interaction data and information about pages visited.

We use information as relevant to deliver the website, respond to enquiries, review corrections, administer requested subscriptions, moderate submissions, diagnose faults, prevent abuse and understand site performance. Advertising services, when enabled, may use information for ad delivery, personalisation, measurement and fraud prevention as explained below.

Processing must have an applicable lawful basis. Depending on the activity, that may include consent, steps needed to provide a requested service, legal obligations or legitimate interests subject to applicable safeguards. Where consent is required, it should be obtained before the relevant processing. Visiting the site does not, by itself, amount to consent to all optional tracking.

Cookies and Similar Technologies

Cookies are small files stored by your browser. Local storage, pixels and similar technologies may also be used. Their functions can include remembering settings, maintaining sessions, supporting security, measuring usage and delivering advertisements. The technologies present depend on the services enabled and your choices.

Browser controls can block or delete cookies and limit some storage. Doing so may affect site features. Blocking cookies does not necessarily prevent all technical processing, and deleting cookies may remove previously saved preferences.

Where the site presents an operational consent-management tool, use it to accept or reject optional purposes and change your choices. Browser settings and advertising preferences provide additional controls, but do not replace any consent mechanism required for the services being used.

This policy page is informational. It does not itself install a consent manager, activate tracking or change your browser preferences. Emailing a request also does not immediately alter cookies already stored on your device.

Google Advertising and Your Choices

Where Google advertising is enabled on this website, third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a visitor’s previous visits to this website or other websites. Google’s advertising cookies allow Google and its partners to select advertisements using visits to this and other sites.

You can manage Google’s personalised advertising preferences through My Ad Center. Information about opting out of participating companies’ interest-based advertising is available through the Digital Advertising Alliance choices page. Available controls depend on your browser, region and the provider. Opting out of personalisation does not mean that no advertisements will appear.

Google’s explanation of how it uses information from sites and apps that use its services describes its processing. Other advertising vendors, if enabled, may use their own cookies and privacy controls; information about active partners should be available in the site’s operational advertising-consent disclosures.

For visitors in regions where consent is required for relevant cookies or personalised advertising, the applicable choices must be presented through the site’s configured consent mechanism. This notice does not claim that the site is approved by AdSense or that any particular ad format is currently running.

Service Providers, Embeds and Sharing

Information may be processed by providers supporting website hosting, delivery, security, email, moderation, analytics and advertising, depending on the services in use. Some providers process information on our instructions; others, including certain advertising or social-media providers, may process information for their own purposes under their privacy notices.

Embedded videos, social-media posts, external fonts or other third-party content may cause your browser to connect to the provider and disclose technical information when that content loads. Links to external websites lead to services with their own privacy practices. Review their notices before interacting with them.

We may disclose information where necessary to comply with an applicable legal obligation, respond to a lawful request, protect legal rights or address security and abuse. We do not promise that correspondence can never be disclosed. We do not publish private contact information merely because someone sends an enquiry.

International Processing

Hosting, email and other service providers may process information outside Nigeria. When a transfer is subject to data-protection requirements, the applicable safeguards and lawful transfer conditions must be considered. The protections and legal access rules in another country may differ from those in your location.

Contact info@thebureaujournal.com if you need information about the providers or transfer arrangements relevant to your interaction with us.

Retention and Security

Retention depends on the purpose, the nature of the information, ongoing correspondence, legal obligations and legitimate record-keeping needs. Editorial correspondence and evidence may need to be kept to explain or defend published reporting. Subscription records may need to be retained to administer your choices, including a minimal record to avoid sending unwanted messages.

Retention periods vary between services and record types. You may ask about the retention applicable to your information. Removing information from active systems may not immediately remove it from backups or records that must lawfully be retained.

Appropriate safeguards should address access, storage and the handling of personal information. No website, email system or transmission method is completely secure. Please avoid sending passwords, financial credentials or unnecessary sensitive documents by ordinary email. This notice makes no claim of an external security certification or an absolute confidentiality guarantee.

Your Requests and Rights

Depending on the applicable law and circumstances, you may request access to personal information, correction of inaccuracies, deletion, restriction of processing or portability, and may object to certain processing. Where processing relies on consent, you may withdraw it without making earlier lawful processing unlawful. Rights may be subject to conditions and exceptions, including those relevant to legal obligations and journalistic activity.

Send a request to info@thebureaujournal.com, describing the information or interaction involved and the action sought. Provide enough detail to locate the record, but avoid unnecessary identity documents. We may request proportionate verification and will respond in accordance with applicable legal requirements. If a request cannot be met in full, we will explain the relevant reason.

If you remain concerned about the handling of your information, you may raise the matter with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission or another competent data-protection authority where applicable.

Subscriptions and Children’s Information

If you receive an available newsletter, use the unsubscribe mechanism supplied in the message or contact info@thebureaujournal.com from the subscribed address. Browser push notifications, where offered, are controlled through your browser’s notification permissions. Unsubscribing from one channel does not necessarily disable a different channel.

The website publishes general news rather than a service specifically designed for children. Where a child’s information is processed and parental or guardian authorisation is legally required, that requirement applies. If you believe a child has submitted personal information inappropriately, contact us with sufficient detail to locate it. We will review the concern and take appropriate action.

Changes and Privacy Contact

We may revise this notice when our services, providers or information-handling practices change. Material changes should be brought to readers’ attention as appropriate. The policy should be read alongside notices shown when you use a particular feature or make a choice about tracking.
