Admiral Usman Jibrin (Rtd) has called on the Igala people to move beyond division and build stronger unity, cooperation and collective purpose as a foundation for the advancement of the Igala Kingdom.

Jibrin made the call while speaking at the 2026 Truth, Peace and Reconciliation Summit in Idah Local Government Area of Kogi State, where stakeholders gathered to discuss reconciliation, peace and the future of the Igala people.

The former Chief of Naval Staff thanked the Attah Igala and the organisers for convening what he described as an important initiative aimed at bringing the people together and contributing to the advancement of the kingdom.

His intervention focused on the practical benefits that could emerge if the Igala people move from what he described as a history of disunity towards greater cooperation and collective action.

Jibrin: Unity Can Strengthen the Igala Kingdom

According to Jibrin, a more united community would be better positioned to respond to challenges, mobilise resources and pursue common objectives.

He identified stronger resilience, improved collaboration, cultural preservation, collective decision-making, social support, adaptability, leadership development and innovation as some of the potential benefits of greater unity.

The former naval chief argued that unity should not merely be understood as political solidarity but as a broader commitment to cooperation among communities, traditional institutions, professionals, youths, women and other stakeholders.

His position comes amid renewed discussions about the political, cultural and developmental future of the Igala people. The Bureau Journal recently reported on the proposed Ane Igala Region and a major consultative forum scheduled to hold in Idah, where stakeholders are expected to discuss questions around governance, development, identity and regional aspirations.

Eight Benefits of Greater Unity

Jibrin outlined eight areas in which greater cohesion could potentially benefit the Igala community.

1. Enhanced Strength and Resilience

He said a more united community would have greater capacity to confront external threats and respond collectively to social, economic and environmental challenges.

Rather than individual communities attempting to address major challenges separately, greater coordination could allow stakeholders to pool knowledge, experience and resources when confronting common problems.

2. Improved Collaboration and Resource Sharing

Jibrin also identified cooperation and resource sharing as important advantages of unity.

In his view, stronger relationships among communities and institutions could create opportunities for people to share knowledge, skills, resources and ideas in ways that support broader development.

This emphasis on collaboration is also reflected in recent initiatives involving Igala stakeholders. The Bureau Journal reported on an Igala-focused youth technology initiative in Kogi, where the Attah Igala commended efforts to expand digital skills and youth development.

3. Cultural Preservation and Identity

The preservation of Igala culture and identity was another area highlighted by Jibrin.

He argued that greater cohesion could help strengthen shared cultural practices, traditions, values and language while creating stronger connections between younger generations and their heritage.

The issue of cultural identity has featured prominently in recent Igala initiatives, including preparations for the wider discussions taking place in Idah around the future of the Igala people.

4. Collective Decision-Making

Jibrin said unity could also make it easier for the community to develop common positions on issues affecting its people.

For him, collective decision-making could provide a stronger basis for strategic planning and engagement with governments, institutions and other stakeholders.

That question has become increasingly relevant as different Igala organisations and community leaders engage in conversations about development, political representation and governance.

5. Increased Social Support

Another benefit identified by the retired naval chief is stronger social support.

He said closer relationships within the community could provide members with greater emotional and social support while strengthening the sense of belonging among people across different communities.

Jibrin’s argument places reconciliation at the centre of the unity conversation, particularly in a community where political disagreements have sometimes created divisions among stakeholders.

The Bureau Journal recently reported Jibrin’s appeal for peace and restraint following political violence in Ejule, where he urged Igala politicians and their supporters to avoid allowing political disagreements to degenerate into violence.

6. Greater Adaptability

Jibrin further argued that unity could improve the community’s ability to adapt to changing circumstances.

A community capable of coordinating its response to economic, environmental, security and social challenges may be better positioned to identify common solutions and adjust to changing conditions.

7. Leadership and Cooperation

He also linked unity to the development of leadership and cooperation skills.

Working towards shared objectives, he said, could encourage individuals to develop leadership abilities while learning how to cooperate with people from different backgrounds and perspectives.

The idea of developing a stronger leadership culture has featured in previous discussions involving Igala stakeholders. The Bureau Journal has also reported on community concerns over development projects and equitable distribution in Kogi, highlighting the importance of effective stakeholder engagement in development planning.

8. Cultural and Technological Advancement

Jibrin identified collaboration as a potential driver of cultural and technological advancement.

He argued that when people combine knowledge, experience and skills, they create greater opportunities for innovation and the transfer of knowledge between generations.

Recent youth-focused initiatives in Kogi provide an example of the type of collaboration that can connect community identity with emerging opportunities. The Bureau Journal reported that a Kogi Youth-in-Tech programme brought together participants from the nine local government areas of Kogi East for intensive digital training.

From Individual Interests to Collective Goals

At the heart of Jibrin’s message was the argument that unity can transform a collection of individuals and communities into a more coordinated society capable of pursuing shared objectives.

He said such cohesion could contribute to greater stability, prosperity and cultural continuity if it is translated into practical cooperation rather than remaining a slogan.

The message is particularly relevant as political and developmental discussions intensify across Kogi East ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.

The Bureau Journal has reported on political developments in Kogi East, including the APC’s selection of its senatorial candidate and the subsequent calls for party stakeholders to manage internal differences.

Another recent report examined voter mobilisation efforts across Kogi East as political actors and residents prepare for the next electoral cycle.

These developments show that political competition is already becoming part of the wider conversation in the district, making the summit’s focus on reconciliation and unity particularly significant to the timing of the discussion.

Jibrin Thanks Attah Igala, Organisers

Jibrin expressed appreciation to the Attah Igala and the organisers of the Truth, Peace and Reconciliation Summit for creating a platform where issues affecting the Igala people could be discussed.

He described the gathering as an important step towards bringing people together and strengthening the foundation for collective development.

The emphasis on reconciliation also builds on Jibrin’s earlier advocacy for mechanisms capable of addressing longstanding political disagreements within Igala communities.

His recent public interventions have repeatedly centred on peace, responsible political engagement, youth development and the need for Igala stakeholders to work together.

Unity Debate Comes Amid Wider Igala Development Discussions

The Idah summit comes at a time when several conversations about the future of the Igala people are taking place simultaneously.

These include debates around regional restructuring, cultural identity, youth empowerment, political representation, security and equitable development.

The proposed Ane Igala regional initiative is one of the latest examples, with stakeholders expected to deliberate on political and socio-economic questions affecting the region.

At the same time, community organisations have continued to push for stronger investment in education, technology and human capital development.

The combination of these discussions has placed increasing attention on the question of whether Igala stakeholders can develop common priorities while accommodating different political and social perspectives.

What the Unity Message Means

Jibrin’s message at the summit ultimately centred on the need to turn calls for unity into practical cooperation.

That could involve stronger engagement among traditional institutions, community organisations, political actors, professionals, youths and other stakeholders on issues that affect the wider population.

For the former naval chief, the potential benefits extend beyond politics to cultural preservation, social cohesion, knowledge sharing, leadership development and economic opportunity.

Whether the message produces lasting change will depend on how stakeholders translate the summit’s discussions into sustained initiatives and cooperation across communities.

For now, the Idah summit has provided another platform for the debate over reconciliation and collective development among the Igala people.

The Bureau Journal will continue to report developments surrounding the Truth, Peace and Reconciliation process and wider initiatives concerning the social, political and economic development of Igala communities.
