The Bureau Journal reports that Google’s parent company, Alphabet, is seeking federal approval in the United States to release about 32 million mosquitoes across parts of California and Florida over the next two years.

The initiative is part of the company’s ongoing “Debug Project,” a biotechnology-driven effort aimed at reducing mosquito populations in order to limit the spread of mosquito-borne diseases.

A Strategy Based on “Good Bugs” and “Bad Bugs”

At first glance, the idea of releasing millions of mosquitoes may appear counterintuitive. However, the project is built around a biological control method that introduces modified “good” mosquitoes into wild populations.

These male mosquitoes are infected with a naturally occurring bacterium known as Wolbachia, which renders them sterile. When they mate with female mosquitoes, the resulting eggs do not hatch, gradually reducing population numbers over time.

“Male mosquitoes don’t bite, so the additional millions buzzing around can’t spread disease or cause any harm to humans,” the project explanation noted.

Scientists say this approach targets disease transmission at its source without the use of chemical insecticides.

Sterile Insect Technique at Scale

The method is based on the Sterile Insect Technique, a pest-control strategy developed in the 1950s and successfully used against insects such as fruit flies and screwworms.

However, scaling the approach for mosquitoes has historically been difficult due to challenges in breeding and sorting large populations efficiently.

Alphabet says its Debug Project uses automated rearing systems and advanced sorting technology to produce and separate millions of sterile male mosquitoes for release.

Previous Trials Show Strong Results

The project is not experimental in concept. Earlier deployments, including the “Debug Fresno” program in California, released about 48 million sterile mosquitoes between 2017 and 2019.

Researchers reported significant reductions in mosquito populations, including a sharp decline in biting females in affected areas.

Targeting Disease-Carrying Species

While earlier efforts focused on Aedes aegypti, a mosquito species linked to diseases such as Zika and dengue fever, the new proposal targets Culex quinquefasciatus, also known as the southern house mosquito.

This species is a known carrier of West Nile virus and St. Louis encephalitis, both of which remain major public health concerns in the United States.

Regulatory Review Underway

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently reviewing Alphabet’s proposal and accepting public comments until June 5 before deciding whether to grant an experimental use permit.

If approved, the project could mark one of the largest biological mosquito-control deployments ever attempted.
