Cristiano Ronaldo has accused Portugal coach Jorge Jesus of twice breaking his word, saying a breakdown in trust prompted him to leave the national team’s camp.

The 41-year-old forward apologised to his teammates and Portuguese supporters, accepted responsibility for walking out and said he remained available for selection after serving any disciplinary punishment.

In a detailed statement, Ronaldo said the dispute concerned promises about his involvement against Norway and an agreement to explain the incident publicly.

Ronaldo Says Coach Promised Him 30 Minutes

According to Ronaldo, Jesus initially proposed a playing schedule designed to manage his physical recovery during the international window.

The Portugal captain said he accepted the arrangement and had not expected to play against Norway. However, he alleged that Jesus approached him on matchday, asked whether he could play for 30 minutes and told him to prepare.

Ronaldo said he warmed up from half-time but remained an unused substitute.

“The coach had broken his word to me,” Ronaldo said.

He acknowledged that he did not greet supporters after the match and apologised to those who had travelled to watch him.

Second Dispute Followed Private Meeting

Ronaldo said he subsequently met Jesus and Al-Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho to discuss what had happened.

He alleged that they agreed the coach would explain publicly that the playing plan had been proposed by Jesus, that Ronaldo had not demanded minutes and that asking him to warm up without bringing him on had been a mistake.

According to Ronaldo, the coach’s subsequent press conference did not reflect their private discussions. He described the episode as a second breach of trust and said it influenced his decision to leave camp.

Jesus has disputed Ronaldo’s account. Reuters reported that the coach denied making an agreement with the player while leaving the door open for his return.

Portugal Captain Accepts Responsibility for Leaving

Despite his criticism of Jesus, Ronaldo said leaving the squad was his own decision and acknowledged that he should not have done so.

“I also owe an apology to my national team teammates for having left the camp,” he said.

He said the Portuguese Football Federation should assess his conduct and impose any appropriate punishment, arguing that his position as captain increased his responsibility.

Ronaldo also denied interfering in coaches’ technical or tactical decisions, maintaining that his complaint concerned trust rather than a demand to control team selection.

Ronaldo Keeps Portugal Return Open

The forward said he had considered ending his international career after the 2026 World Cup but was persuaded to reconsider by the federation’s president.

He said he supported Jesus’ appointment and remained interested in competing for Portugal rather than focusing solely on a farewell appearance.

Ronaldo maintained that, provided he was physically fit and playing for his club, he would remain available to represent the national team after any suspension.

The dispute leaves the federation to address the captain’s departure while the player and coach continue to offer conflicting accounts of their discussions.
