Motorists in Kano State may soon experience faster and more efficient vehicle licensing services as the Kano State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS) and the Kano State Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) have agreed to strengthen collaboration to improve service delivery and boost regulatory compliance.
KIRS, VIO Seek Improved Vehicle Licensing Services
The renewed partnership was announced on Monday when officials of the Kano State Road Traffic Department under the Ministry of Transportation paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of KIRS, Alhaji Bashir Yusuf Maitama, FCTI, CNA, NIM, at the agency’s headquarters in Kano.
The visiting delegation congratulated the KIRS Chairman on his appointment and held discussions on deepening inter-agency cooperation in vehicle licensing, revenue administration, and the enforcement of traffic regulations across the state.
KIRS Chairman Pledges Action on Licensing Bottlenecks
Speaking during the meeting, Maitama reaffirmed the Kano State Government’s commitment to improving internally generated revenue through innovation, institutional collaboration, and enhanced public service delivery.
He said KIRS would work closely with the Vehicle Inspection Office and other relevant agencies to address operational bottlenecks affecting vehicle registration and licensing across Kano State.
The KIRS chairman expressed concern over the increasing number of vehicle owners registering their vehicles outside Kano State due to the shortage of vehicle number plates.
According to him, efforts are already underway to secure the prompt release of number plates to reverse the trend and ensure that motorists can conveniently complete their vehicle registration within the state.
He noted that resolving the shortage would not only improve access to licensing services but also strengthen the state’s revenue base.
KIRS Raises Alarm Over Fake Number Plates
Also speaking, the KIRS Executive Director, Compliance and Enforcement Group, Mallam Muhammad Abba Aliyu, stressed that stronger institutional synergy remains critical to achieving the state’s revenue targets.
Aliyu also raised concerns over the growing circulation of fake vehicle number plates and forged vehicle licences in Kano State, describing the development as a major threat to public safety and government revenue.
He called for coordinated action by all relevant agencies to curb the circulation of fake documents and ensure strict compliance with vehicle registration and licensing regulations.
Agencies Commit to Stronger Collaboration
The meeting ended with KIRS and the Kano State Vehicle Inspection Office reaffirming their commitment to sustained collaboration aimed at modernising vehicle licensing processes, improving regulatory compliance, tackling fake number plates and forged licences, and delivering more efficient services to motorists across Kano State.
The partnership is also expected to strengthen revenue administration while making it easier for vehicle owners to complete registration and licensing processes within the state. The Bureau Journal.
