Barely months into the political build-up to the 2027 governorship election, the signs are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. From high-profile defections and strategic endorsements to the growing inability of opposition parties to present a coherent alternative, Gombe State may be witnessing the gradual collapse of its opposition as a formidable political force.
Politics is ultimately a contest of ideas, credibility, organisation and public confidence. In Gombe State today, however, the opposition appears to be confronting a far more fundamental challenge—its own survival.
Defections Continue to Weaken Opposition Parties
As the 2027 governorship election gradually approaches, the state’s political landscape is witnessing an unmistakable trend. Opposition parties are steadily weakening through defections, shrinking grassroots structures and declining political momentum.
One of the clearest examples is the decision of Dr. Ahmed Gana, the former State Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), alongside a large number of his supporters and other party stakeholders, to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in support of the governorship aspiration of Dr. Jamil Isyaku Gwamna.
Such a high-profile defection is politically significant because the office of a state secretary is central to party administration, coordination and mobilisation. When officials occupying such strategic positions leave, they often take with them valuable experience, organisational capacity and political networks that are not easily replaced.
Growing Momentum Behind the APC
The Bureau Journal reports that the development is not occurring in isolation. In recent months, the APC has continued to attract influential political figures, community leaders and grassroots mobilisers from across the political divide.
The endorsement of Dr. Jamil Isyaku Gwamna by prominent Gombe stakeholders during a well-attended gathering in Abuja—including former ministers, retired military officers, ambassadors, permanent secretaries, academics, captains of industry and young professionals—has further strengthened perceptions that the ruling party enjoys increasing political momentum ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Similarly, endorsements from respected political figures, including former Deputy Governor Hon. Charles Yau Iliya, alongside declarations of support from Fulbe leaders across Gombe State and other community groups, have reinforced the APC’s expanding political base.
Governance Record Shapes Political Conversation
Supporters of the APC argue that the administration of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has significantly changed the political narrative through investments in infrastructure, agriculture, education, healthcare, rural development and economic empowerment.
According to them, these achievements have narrowed the opposition’s campaign options by shifting public attention toward governance performance rather than political rhetoric.
They contend that instead of presenting an alternative policy direction, opposition parties have increasingly relied on criticism without offering a comprehensive development agenda capable of convincing the electorate.
Questions Over Opposition Messaging
Political observers have also pointed to what they describe as inconsistencies in the messaging of some opposition figures.
Some politicians have openly declared support for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu while simultaneously urging voters to reject the APC at the state level.
Analysts argue that such positions may create confusion among voters and raise questions about the consistency of the opposition’s political strategy.
Organisation Remains Key to Electoral Success
Beyond public statements and social media engagement, elections are largely determined by strong grassroots structures, polling unit agents, ward executives, local government coordinators and sustained voter mobilisation.
While opposition parties have remained active online, many political observers believe they are yet to demonstrate the organisational depth required to effectively challenge the ruling APC across the state’s 11 local government areas.
Political momentum, once established, often becomes self-reinforcing as influential stakeholders, community leaders and supporters align themselves with platforms they believe have greater electoral prospects.
Opposition Faces Defining Test Ahead of 2027
The opposition also faces the difficult task of presenting a united and credible alternative capable of inspiring public confidence.
Internal disagreements, changing political alliances and debates surrounding the consistency of some of its leading figures have complicated efforts to build a cohesive platform ahead of the election.
For any opposition to remain competitive, criticism alone is rarely sufficient. Success requires a clear vision, credible leadership, practical policy proposals and a united political structure capable of persuading voters that it offers a better alternative.
With defections continuing, influential stakeholders aligning with the ruling party and political momentum appearing to favour the APC, the coming months may prove decisive for opposition parties seeking to remain relevant in Gombe State politics.
Whether the opposition can reverse the current trend remains to be seen. However, based on recent political developments, it faces the significant challenge of rebuilding public confidence, strengthening its organisational structures and convincing voters that it remains a viable alternative ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
As political activities gather pace, many observers believe that organisation, credibility, momentum and public confidence will ultimately determine the outcome of the next governorship contest in Gombe State.
