The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Gombe State, Dr Jamil Isyaku Gwamna, has called for renewed patriotism, national unity and greater opportunities for young people and women as Nigeria marks its 66th independence anniversary and Gombe celebrates 30 years of statehood.
In an October 1 statement signed by his spokesman, Ibrahim Sani Shawai, Gwamna urged citizens to make collective contributions towards a stronger economy, peaceful communities and inclusive development.
He said the anniversaries should encourage reflection on the sacrifices of earlier generations and the responsibilities facing Nigerians today.
Gwamna Urges Commitment to National Development
Gwamna described independence as a milestone reflecting the resilience and aspirations of Nigerians, saying the country had continued to confront difficulties through the determination and creativity of its people.
“Independence is not only a celebration of our past; it is also a reminder of our responsibility to the present and our duty to future generations. Nigeria belongs to all of us, and its progress requires the contribution and sacrifice of every citizen,” he said.
He urged Nigerians to uphold peace, justice, democracy and unity, while supporting efforts to improve security, education, healthcare and employment.
Gwamna also identified agriculture and industrial development as areas requiring sustained commitment to expand economic opportunities.
His message follows an earlier Democracy Day appeal for unity and peaceful political participation.
Youths and Women Central to Development
The APC candidate called for greater opportunities for young Nigerians and women, describing their participation as essential to economic transformation and sustainable development.
The statement did not announce a new programme, funding commitment or implementation timetable for those priorities.
Gwamna has previously outlined his position on youth development and mentorship in Gombe. The Bureau Journal has also reported on a women’s unity summit convened by his wife, Dr Zainab Jamil Gwamna.
Gombe Marks 30 Years of Statehood
Gombe State was created on October 1, 1996, from the former Bauchi State, making this year’s celebration its 30th anniversary. The occasion marks state creation, distinct from Nigeria’s independence anniversary.
Gwamna congratulated residents on their contributions to the state’s development and praised Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya’s policies and initiatives.
His assessment of the administration’s performance was expressed in the statement, which did not provide project-level evidence or performance figures.
He reaffirmed his commitment to accountability, inclusive governance and development, describing “Gombe Above All” as the guiding principle of his political vision.
Gwamna urged residents to preserve peace, participate peacefully in the democratic process and place the state’s collective interests at the centre of public life.
He wished Nigerians and Gombe residents peaceful anniversary celebrations and prayed for continued progress and prosperity.
