Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has urged Nigerians to protect democratic values, preserve national unity and support efforts to strengthen security as the country marks its 66th independence anniversary.
In his anniversary message, Idris congratulated Nigerians and called for peaceful coexistence, collective responsibility and sustained prayers for the country’s stability and prosperity.
He described the occasion as an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s journey since independence in 1960, honour the sacrifices of its founding fathers and renew commitment to national development.
Idris Calls for Protection of Democratic Gains
The governor said democracy, the rule of law, justice, fairness and good governance remained essential to sustainable development and national stability.
He urged citizens to reject actions capable of undermining peace or constitutional order, saying political, religious and ethnic differences should not weaken the bonds holding Nigerians together.
“We are stronger in unity, and our prosperity lies in upholding togetherness as one indivisible entity,” Idris said.
He maintained that Nigeria’s diversity should be a source of strength and encouraged citizens to respect one another regardless of their backgrounds or affiliations.
The appeal follows the state government’s recent warning against political violence after unrest in Jega.
Governor Pays Tribute to Nigeria’s Founding Fathers
Idris acknowledged the contributions of Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe and Chief Obafemi Awolowo to Nigeria’s political development.
He said their patriotism, courage and commitment should inspire present and future generations to place national interests above personal or sectional considerations.
The governor urged Nigerians to recognise that the freedom achieved at independence carried a continuing responsibility to build a peaceful and prosperous country.
He also called for prayers, mutual understanding and resilience, expressing confidence that collective effort could help the country overcome its challenges.
Idris Reaffirms Commitment to Security in Kebbi
Addressing residents of Kebbi State, Idris said his administration remained committed to protecting lives and property while sustaining development projects and empowerment initiatives.
He appealed for patience, cooperation and public support in confronting security challenges, describing the protection of communities as a shared responsibility involving government, security agencies and citizens.
His assurance comes against the backdrop of earlier pledges to strengthen security following attacks around Kaoje in Bagudo Local Government Area.
Security concerns have also affected education. The state government previously explained its position on school closures and students’ safety in communities affected by insecurity.
The anniversary message did not announce a new security operation, funding allocation or implementation timetable.
Kebbi Governor Expresses Support for Tinubu
Idris expressed confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s leadership and reaffirmed his administration’s support for efforts to strengthen the economy, security and democratic institutions.
He thanked Kebbi residents for their cooperation and said his government would remain focused on policies intended to improve living conditions and support the state’s long-term development.
He wished Nigerians a peaceful 66th independence anniversary and prayed for continued unity, stability and progress.
