ABUJA — The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested two suspected members of a “one-chance” robbery syndicate in Abuja and recovered nine Android phones and other exhibits from a Toyota Camry allegedly linked to the suspects.
The suspects, identified as Okwudili Benjamin, 41, and Chinedu Mbaka, 37, were arrested on Sunday, September 20, 2026, around Court of Appeal Junction in Abuja.
According to the police, operatives intercepted the two men while they were in the vehicle and recovered nine Android phones, pliers, a wheel lock and other items.
The command said the investigation continued after the initial arrests, eventually leading detectives to another suspect allegedly connected to the operation.
Police Arrest Alleged Receiver in Nyanya
Further investigation led to the arrest of Osondu Benard at NPC Junction in Nyanya, whom the police identified as an alleged receiver linked to the suspected robbery syndicate.
The arrest suggests that investigators are looking beyond the alleged street-level robbery operation to establish how property suspected to have been obtained during criminal activities was allegedly handled or transferred.
The police have not disclosed the identities of the owners of the nine recovered phones or confirmed that all the devices were stolen from victims. Those details are expected to form part of the ongoing investigation.
The three suspects remain in police custody as investigators continue to examine the evidence and establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.
Abuja Faces Renewed Security Concerns
The arrests come amid renewed security concerns in Abuja and other parts of the country, with law enforcement agencies stepping up operations against robbery, kidnapping and other forms of violent crime.
The FCT Police Command recently carried out a wider security operation across suspected crime hotspots in the capital as part of efforts to disrupt robbery and “one-chance” activities.
The latest development also comes at a time when police authorities have urged security formations to strengthen surveillance around vulnerable locations nationwide. The Bureau Journal previously reported the police warning over possible terrorist mobilisation around schools, NYSC camps and other public gathering points.
One-chance robbery remains a particular concern for commuters because the perpetrators often operate through vehicles and target unsuspecting passengers.
In such cases, victims may be robbed after entering vehicles they believe are legitimate commercial transport, making awareness and caution important when boarding unfamiliar vehicles.
Police Probe Suspected Criminal Network
The arrest of an alleged receiver could provide investigators with an opportunity to establish whether the suspects were operating independently or as part of a wider network.
Police investigations into organised criminal activity often involve tracing suspected stolen property, identifying possible accomplices and establishing the roles played by different individuals.
The development is also coming against a broader national debate about policing and security arrangements.
The debate has gained momentum amid persistent concerns over kidnapping, robbery, terrorism and other violent crimes across different parts of Nigeria.
Security Concerns Extend Beyond Abuja
Recent security incidents along major highways have also highlighted the risks faced by travellers in different parts of the country.
That incident was followed by a reported ransom demand for some of the victims still in captivity. A subsequent report detailed the alleged demand of ₦20 million for each NYSC member still being held by the kidnappers.
Security concerns have also surfaced in other parts of Kogi, including an attack on an ADC meeting in Ejule, where several people were reportedly injured. The Bureau Journal previously reported the Ejule attack and the security concerns surrounding the area.
Suspects Remain in Custody
The FCT Police Command has not announced the conclusion of its investigation into the alleged one-chance robbery syndicate.
The three suspects remain in custody while detectives continue their investigation into the recovered phones and other exhibits and examine the alleged connection between the arrested men.
Any further arrests or charges will depend on the outcome of the investigation and evidence gathered by the police.
The suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of law.
