Aminu Kano College of Islamic and Legal Studies has denied banning female students from wearing the niqab, saying its entry procedures require brief face identification at designated security checkpoints.
In a statement issued by its Director of Press and Protocol, Dr Salisu Marafa, the college dismissed social media claims that students wearing the religious garment were being denied access to its premises.
Management said the procedures were intended to protect students, staff and property and prevent prohibited items from entering the campus.
Students Can Wear Niqab After Identification
The college explained that students wearing the niqab must briefly uncover their faces for identification and verification at designated checkpoints.
They must also open their bags for inspection before entering.
According to management, students may continue wearing the niqab after completing the checks. It maintained that the identification requirement did not amount to a ban.
College Outlines Wider Security Requirements
Management said general screening requirements applied to all students, regardless of gender or religious attire.
Staff members must present identification cards, while vehicles entering the premises are subject to inspection. The college also maintains restrictions on vehicles with tinted windows.
| Category | Requirement described by management |
|---|---|
| Students wearing the niqab | Brief face identification at designated checkpoints and bag inspection; niqab permitted afterwards |
| All students | General security screening to prevent prohibited items entering campus |
| Staff | Presentation of identification cards |
| Vehicles | Security checks and restrictions concerning tinted windows |
The institution said the arrangements also addressed concerns about indiscipline and the entry of prohibited items.
Security at educational institutions has featured in wider reporting, including police alerts concerning schools, NYSC camps and other vulnerable locations.
Management Cites Past Security Incident
The statement recalled a 2014 incident in which, according to management, security personnel refused entry to a woman wearing the niqab after becoming suspicious.
Management said she subsequently went towards neighbouring Kano State Polytechnic, where an explosion reportedly killed several people.
The college cited its account of the incident to explain its emphasis on vigilance, while maintaining that the current procedures were not intended to target niqab-wearing students.
Public Urged to Verify Social Media Claims
Management asked members of the public to verify information before sharing it, warning that inaccurate accounts could create tension and misunderstanding.
It appealed to parents, guardians, religious leaders and other stakeholders to support campus safety and peaceful relations.
The college reaffirmed its commitment to Islamic education, moral development and academic excellence, saying security procedures would be implemented with respect for religious practices and individual dignity.
