A Fulani woman identified as Khadijat has allegedly stabbed her co-wife, Ramatu, to death in the Ijoka area of Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday, August 13, 2026, while members of the family were in the bush harvesting palm kernels.
The Bureau Journal gathered from the husband of the two women, who identified himself simply as Jibrin, that he received a distress call at about 4pm concerning an incident involving his wives and other members of the family.
How the Fulani Co-Wife Killing Happened
He said Ramatu reportedly raised an alarm and cried for help while the attack was taking place.
Her cries attracted the attention of other family members who were harvesting palm kernels in another part of the bush.
Jibrin said that when the family members attempted to move towards the location, Khadijat allegedly warned them not to enter the area, claiming that it was unsafe.
The family members subsequently contacted Jibrin, who was informed about the situation.
Victim Found Dead in the Bush
By the time the family members reached the location, Khadijat had reportedly fled the area.
Jibrin said Ramatu was found with multiple stab wounds and was already dead.
He said the circumstances surrounding the incident later pointed to Khadijat as the alleged attacker.
The incident has added to concerns over violent crimes in parts of Kogi State. In May, The Bureau Journal reported the arrest of two suspected terrorists in Ajaokuta, Kogi State, during a patrol operation involving security forces and local vigilantes.
Earlier Disagreement Between the Co-Wives
Jibrin said the two women had a disagreement several weeks before the incident.
According to him, the family did not realise that the earlier dispute could eventually result in a violent confrontation.
He alleged that Khadijat may have continued to harbour resentment over the disagreement before the fatal incident.
Community Alerts Security Authorities
Following the discovery of Ramatu’s body, members of the community reportedly took the deceased to the traditional leader, who subsequently alerted the relevant security authorities.
The incident reportedly caused tension within the community as residents sought clarification about what had happened.
Jibrin said it was important to establish that the killing was allegedly the result of an internal family dispute and not an attack by members of the host community.
The clarification is particularly important in an area where security concerns have previously generated tension. The Bureau Journal has also reported on a separate killing in Anyigba that prompted calls for investigation and justice.
Husband Appeals for Apprehension of Suspect
Jibrin said he had informed members of the Fulani community in neighbouring parts of Benue and Nasarawa states about the incident and appealed to them to assist in locating Khadijat if she was found within their areas.
He also said he had informed members of his community that the host Igala community should not be blamed for the killing.
The suspect was reportedly still at large as of the time of filing this report.
Investigation Expected
The Bureau Journal understands that the allegations surrounding the killing are based on accounts provided by the deceased’s family and have not yet been independently established by the police or a court.
There was no immediate official statement from the Kogi State Police Command confirming the incident or announcing the arrest of the suspect.
Security authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding Ramatu’s death, establish what led to the confrontation and determine the whereabouts of the alleged attacker.
The incident comes amid wider security concerns in Kogi State, including attacks on travellers along major highways. Previous security operations in Kogi have involved joint efforts by the military and local vigilantes to track suspected criminal elements.
The Bureau Journal will continue to monitor developments and provide updates if the police or other relevant authorities issue an official statement.
