There was tension in Modakeke, Osun State, on Saturday after some men dressed in police uniforms allegedly stormed a distribution centre and disrupted the distribution of election materials ahead of the Osun State governorship election.
The allegation was made in a post on X by a user identified as Oyindampla, who claimed that the men fired tear gas while election officials were preparing materials for distribution.
“Serious drama this morning in Osun state as some men dressed as Police Officers Allegedly Storm Centre in Modakeke, Fire Tear Gas and Disrupt Distribution of Osun Election Material,” the user wrote.
Election Materials Distribution Disrupted
According to the post, the incident occurred at a distribution centre in Modakeke as officials prepared to move election materials ahead of Saturday’s governorship poll.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged disruption remain unclear, and there was no immediate independent confirmation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) or the Osun State Police Command.
The Bureau Journal also could not independently verify the identities of the men seen at the centre or establish whether they were genuine police officers.
Security Concerns Ahead of Osun Governorship Election
The reported incident has added to concerns over security as voters across Osun State prepare to elect the next governor.
Election security remains a major issue in Nigeria, particularly where political tensions are high and electoral officials are transporting sensitive materials. The Bureau Journal’s guide to Nigeria’s elections examines voter safety, electoral security and other issues that can affect the conduct of elections.
The need to protect election officials and materials is particularly important because any disruption at distribution centres could affect the timely delivery of materials to polling locations.
Modakeke Has Featured in Previous Election Disputes
Modakeke has previously featured in reports concerning election-related disputes and the distribution of electoral materials.
Reports from earlier Osun elections have documented concerns about the arrival and distribution of election materials in parts of Modakeke and surrounding communities.
The latest allegation therefore comes in an area with a history of heightened political attention during election periods.
Authorities Yet to Confirm Alleged Incident
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from INEC confirming that the distribution of election materials was disrupted in Modakeke.
There was also no confirmation from the Osun State Police Command that its personnel were involved in the alleged incident.
Any attempt by individuals to impersonate security personnel, interfere with electoral materials or disrupt the electoral process would require investigation by the appropriate authorities.
Osun Voters Head to the Polls
The reported incident comes as voters across Osun State prepare to cast their ballots in the governorship election.
Political parties and their supporters have been urged to maintain peace and allow voters to exercise their democratic rights without intimidation or interference.
The Bureau Journal will continue to monitor developments from Osun State, including official statements from INEC, the police and other relevant security agencies.
For wider context on Nigeria’s evolving electoral process, read The Bureau Journal’s analysis of the 2027 elections, electoral reforms and voter safety.
Any further information from INEC or the security agencies will help establish what occurred at the Modakeke distribution centre and whether the individuals involved were genuine police officers.
