Several members of a private security outfit linked to Yoruba Nation campaigner, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, were reportedly injured after suspected cross-border bandits allegedly ambushed them during a security operation inside the Old Oyo National Park in Oyo State.
The Bureau Journal gathered that the incident occurred while operatives of Iru Ekun, a private security outfit associated with Igboho, were conducting an operation aimed at tracking suspected kidnappers and other armed criminal groups believed to be operating within the expansive forest reserve.
Operation Targeted Criminal Hideouts
According to sources familiar with the operation, members of the security outfit deployed surveillance drones to identify suspected criminal camps and monitor the movement of armed groups before advancing into the forest.
The intelligence-driven operation was reportedly designed to dismantle criminal hideouts believed to have served as bases for kidnappers and other violent groups operating around the area.
Operatives Allegedly Came Under Heavy Attack
Sources said the mission turned violent when the operatives allegedly came under attack from heavily armed men suspected to be members of cross-border criminal networks.
The attackers reportedly opened fire on the advancing security team, leaving several members of the private outfit with injuries. The exact number of those injured has not been officially confirmed.
Details surrounding the exchange and the extent of casualties remain unclear as authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
Security Concerns Persist Around Old Oyo National Park
The Old Oyo National Park has repeatedly featured in security reports due to allegations that armed criminal groups use parts of the vast forest as operational bases.
Communities surrounding the reserve have in recent years raised concerns over incidents of kidnapping, attacks on farmers and other violent crimes allegedly linked to criminal elements operating within the forest corridors.
Security agencies have continued efforts to curb criminal activities in the area through joint operations and intelligence gathering.
Official Confirmation Awaited
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Oyo State Government, security agencies nor representatives of Sunday Igboho had issued an official statement confirming the reported ambush or providing details on the condition of the injured operatives.
The Bureau Journal will continue to monitor developments and provide verified updates as more information becomes available.
