The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Tin Can Island Port Command, has intercepted two containers carrying cannabis-infused cookies, gummies and Cannabis indica weighing a combined 1,201.83 kilogrammes at the Lagos port.

The command estimated the combined street value of the seized substances at ₦3.67 billion.

In a statement issued on Friday, the command’s Public Relations Officer, Oscar Ivara, said Customs officers discovered the consignments during joint examinations with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The substances were concealed among used vehicles and automobile spare parts in two separate 40-foot containers intercepted in September.

First Container Held Cannabis-Infused Cookies and Gummies

Ivara said officers intercepted the first container, numbered MSDU655132/0, on September 2, 2026.

A complete joint physical examination uncovered 890 packs of Delta-8 cannabis-infused cookies and gummies weighing 598.08 kilogrammes.

“Following a thorough 100 per cent joint physical examination conducted by both agencies, it was found to contain a total of 890 packs of Delta-8 cannabis-infused cookies and gummies, with a combined weight of 598.08 kilogrammes,” he said.

The container also held a used 2008 Mercedes-Benz and a used 2012 Nissan Infiniti.

Second Seizure Valued at ₦3.62 Billion

The second container, numbered SKU625643/6, was intercepted on September 16, 2026.

According to Ivara, its examination uncovered 1,207 packages of Cannabis indica weighing 603.75 kilogrammes, with an estimated street value of ₦3.62 billion.

Customs Flags Concealment in Vehicle Cargo

Ivara said hiding the substances among vehicles and spare parts illustrated attempts by smugglers to exploit containerised cargo to move prohibited goods through Nigeria’s seaports.

He attributed the discoveries to sustained vigilance and cooperation between Customs and NDLEA personnel.

The interceptions add to other drug enforcement developments reported by The Bureau Journal, including the seizure of opioids in Taraba and arrests of suspected drug traffickers.

In a separate operation, the agency also uncovered a methamphetamine laboratory in Ebonyi, highlighting another aspect of its investigations into illicit drug production and distribution.

Seized Substances to Be Handed Over to NDLEA

The Customs spokesperson said the seized substances would be formally handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation in accordance with established procedures.

He described the interceptions as part of the agencies’ efforts to prevent drug smuggling through the country’s seaports and protect public health, safety and security.
