Eight members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have announced their resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing insecurity, internal disagreements and dissatisfaction with Governor Dauda Lawal’s leadership.
The resignations were announced on Sunday, October 4, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In their separate letters, the lawmakers cited a lack of unity among party stakeholders, alleged injustice and deception, and what they described as inadequate government attention to security challenges in their constituencies.
Lawmakers explain departure from APC
Ibrahim T. Tukur, representing Bakura Constituency, said his resignation took immediate effect following consultations.
He attributed his decision to disagreements within the party and dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of insecurity in his constituency and across Zamfara.
Tukur also criticised what he described as the governor’s “nonchalant attitude” and “poor leadership.”
Aliyu Ango Kagara, representing Talata Mafara South, similarly said his decision followed consultations, citing alleged injustice, deception and dissatisfaction with the governor’s approach.
The lawmakers thanked APC leaders and members for their support during their membership of the party.
Seven lawmakers named in resignation account
The account of the resignations identifies the following lawmakers:
- Ibrahim T. Tukur — Bakura Constituency.
- Aliyu Ango Kagara — Talata Mafara South Constituency.
- Bashar Aliyu — Gummi I Constituency.
- Faruk Musa Dosara — Maradun I Constituency.
- Basiru Bello — Bungudu West Constituency.
- Nasiru Abdullahi — Maru North Constituency.
- Mukhtaru Nasiru Jikan Shehu — Kaura Namoda North Constituency.
The eighth lawmaker was identified by constituency as the representative of Bukkuyum North, but the name was not provided.
The resignation account did not identify a new political party for the lawmakers.
Departures follow Lawal’s move to APC
Governor Lawal joined the APC in March 2026 after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In a statement published by the Zamfara State Government, his spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, said the decision followed consultations and was prompted by the PDP’s internal crisis and legal disputes.
The government described the move as a step intended to sustain its “Rescue and Rebuild” programme.
The latest departures add to political realignments ahead of 2027. The Bureau Journal has separately reported the Gombe ADC secretary’s defection to the APC and a Gombe PDP youth leader’s resignation from his party.
In Zamfara, the departing lawmakers identified security concerns and their disagreements with the party’s leadership as the principal reasons for leaving.
