The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old woman, Precious Yohanna, over the alleged killing of her newborn son in the Jabi area of Abuja.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed the arrest in a statement issued on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.
Adeh said police received a distress call at about 10:30 p.m. on October 4 after a baby was discovered abandoned in a bush in Jabi.
Operatives from Jabi Division responded and recovered the male infant, who had injuries to his throat and abdomen. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel confirmed him dead.
Community members assisted police in tracing suspect
Following the discovery, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, directed operatives to identify and apprehend the person responsible.
According to Adeh, information provided by community members helped police trace and arrest Yohanna, a resident of the Daki-Biu/Jabi area.
The command identified her as a native of Riyam in Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
Police outline preliminary findings
Police said preliminary investigations indicated that Yohanna gave birth inside her room at about 4 p.m. on October 3.
The command alleged that she subsequently inflicted fatal injuries on the newborn with a razor blade.
According to the police statement, the suspect told investigators that she acted out of hatred for the baby’s father.
Suspect remains in custody
Sanusi condemned the incident as a grave violation of the sanctity of human life and commended residents who assisted investigators in identifying and arresting the suspect.
He assured the public that the command would thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death.
Yohanna remains in police custody. The command said she would be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.
