The Aminu Kano College of Islamic and Legal Studies (AKCILS), Kano, has organised a public lecture aimed at deepening understanding of the spiritual, moral and social significance of Ṣalāh (Islamic prayer).

The lecture, titled “The Philosophy of Ṣalāh: From Takbīr to Taslīm,” was delivered by renowned Islamic scholar, Professor Sheikh Umar Sani Fagge, before an audience comprising staff, students and members of the public.

The programme formed part of AKCILS’ efforts to promote sound Islamic scholarship and revive the intellectual and religious gatherings for which the institution has been known over the years.

Why AKCILS Organised the Ṣalāh Lecture

Speaking during the event, the Chairman of the College Religious Affairs Committee, Malam Auwal Muhammad Karaye, said the programme followed a request by the Acting Provost of the College, Dr. Ali Tamasi Mu’az, to Professor Fagge during an earlier lecture organised by the Department of Geography.

According to Karaye, Dr. Tamasi considered the subject important because of the need to help Muslims understand the wisdom and spiritual lessons contained in the different stages of Ṣalāh, from Takbīr to Taslīm.

The initiative also reflects the college’s wider effort to strengthen Islamic scholarship and provide opportunities for students, academics and members of the public to engage with religious and intellectual issues.

AKCILS Plans Hausa Translation of Lecture

In his remarks, Dr. Ali Tamasi Mu’az commended Professor Fagge for accepting the invitation despite his busy schedule.

He announced that the college would transcribe the lecture and translate it into Hausa to make the scholarly material accessible to a wider audience.

Dr. Tamasi also disclosed that AKCILS would compile questions raised by participants alongside the lecturer’s research-based responses, with the intention of preserving and publishing the material for the benefit of the wider Muslim community.

“We are fully determined to revive all the Islamic scholarly gatherings AKCILS has been known for over the decades. This is with a view to strengthening our institutional mandate of being a citadel of Islamic knowledge,” Dr. Tamasi said.

Professor Fagge Explains Lessons in Ṣalāh

Delivering the lecture, Professor Sheikh Umar Sani Fagge explained that Ṣalāh should not be viewed only as an act of worship but also as a spiritual and physical discipline capable of shaping responsible, disciplined and morally upright individuals.

The Islamic scholar highlighted several values associated with Ṣalāh, including leadership, equality before Allah, cleanliness, time management, brotherhood, unity, peace and tranquillity.

He explained that the different components of Islamic prayer contain lessons that can influence individual character and contribute to the development of a more disciplined society when properly understood and practised.

College to Preserve Lecture for Wider Audience

The decision to transcribe and translate the lecture into Hausa is expected to make the material available beyond those who attended the event in person.

By preserving the questions raised during the lecture and the corresponding research-based answers, AKCILS also intends to create reference material that can be accessed by students, scholars and members of the wider Muslim community.

The initiative further highlights Kano’s long-standing role as an important centre of Islamic learning and scholarship in northern Nigeria.

Registrar Commends Organisers

In her vote of thanks, the College Registrar, Hajiya Raliya Aliyu Abubakar, expressed appreciation to Professor Fagge for honouring the invitation.

She also commended the Religious Affairs Committee for its dedication and commitment to organising the programme.

AKCILS Reaffirms Commitment to Islamic Scholarship

The lecture forms part of AKCILS’ broader commitment to reviving scholarly gatherings and promoting intellectual and religious enlightenment through meaningful academic and Islamic discourse.

The institution said such programmes are intended to strengthen its role as a centre of Islamic knowledge while providing students and members of the public with opportunities to engage with scholars on issues of spiritual, moral and societal importance.

The planned transcription and Hausa translation of the lecture are expected to further extend its reach and preserve the scholarly discussions generated during the event.

AKCILS is expected to continue organising similar scholarly programmes as part of its effort to strengthen Islamic education and intellectual engagement in Kano.
