The Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), Jide Idris, has said the possibility of postponing Nigeria’s 2027 general election could be considered if the Ebola outbreak spreads widely, while stressing that there is currently no need to delay the polls.
Idris made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, October 26, amid concerns about the confirmed Ebola case in the country.
“We hope the election will not be postponed but if the thing gets wide enough that might be considered, as at now there is no need for that,” he said.
The NCDC chief also rejected suggestions that the disease could be used as a political weapon, insisting that public health concerns should not be exploited for political purposes.
Nigeria Confirms Ebola Case in Abuja
The Federal Government confirmed a case of Ebola disease caused by the Bundibugyo virus in the Federal Capital Territory following laboratory tests on a patient.
According to the NCDC’s October 25 update, the patient was receiving medical care in isolation, while health authorities worked to identify and monitor people who might have been exposed.
The response includes contact tracing, surveillance and infection prevention measures aimed at preventing further transmission.
The development has drawn attention to Nigeria’s preparedness for infectious disease outbreaks, with health authorities urging the public to follow official guidance and avoid spreading unverified information.
Election Preparations Continue Ahead of 2027
The 2027 general election is scheduled to begin in January, with political parties and aspirants preparing for the polls.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has continued preparations for the election, including making the preliminary register of voters available online for public scrutiny. Voters can check the register through the INEC online voter register portal.

No Decision to Postpone Polls Announced
Idris’s comments indicate that postponement is a possibility only if the public health situation deteriorates significantly. They do not amount to an announcement that the 2027 election will be postponed.
The NCDC’s immediate priority remains containing the infection and monitoring possible contacts. Any change to the election timetable would need to be confirmed through an official announcement by the relevant authorities.
For now, the election remains scheduled, while public health officials continue to assess the situation and implement measures to prevent further transmission.
