The Federal Government has announced a 30-day discount on petrol sold by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, with public transport operators nationwide to receive priority.
The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, disclosed the arrangement during a press briefing on petrol prices and subsidy-related issues in Abuja on Thursday.
Oyedele said the intervention would allow NNPC to sell petrol at cost, stressing that it did not represent a return to petrol subsidy.
“We are offering a discount on petrol dispensed by NNPC Limited for the next 30 days in the first instance with priority for public transporters nationwide. So, it’s not a subsidy; the government is just saying we sell to you at cost,” he said.
Public transport operators to receive priority
The announcement places public transport operators at the centre of the temporary arrangement, with Oyedele describing the initial discount period as 30 days.
He did not specify the discounted pump price or explain how transport operators would access the priority arrangement in the remarks provided.
Reported NNPC petrol prices before the discount
NNPC’s latest reported price list puts petrol at ₦1,355 per litre in Lagos and Rivers states, while the price in Abuja is listed at ₦1,370 per litre.
| Location | Reported pump price per litre |
|---|---|
| Lagos | ₦1,355 |
| Rivers | ₦1,355 |
| Abuja | ₦1,370 |
These are the reported prices preceding the announcement, rather than confirmed prices under the new discount arrangement.
