Former Deputy Governor of Kano State, Abdulsalam Gwarzo, has said he considers himself more humble than Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, attributing his political success to what he described as humility, leadership capacity, humanity and strong grassroots support.
Gwarzo made the remarks during an interview with a private online radio station in Kano, where he reflected on his political career and his approach to public service. The Bureau Journal reports that the comments have sparked fresh discussions within Kano’s political circles.
Gwarzo Reflects on Political Journey
The former deputy governor said his years in public office were defined by a commitment to serving ordinary citizens, adding that his relationship with the grassroots earned him the confidence of the electorate.
According to him, his political rise was based on public trust rather than party structures.
He recalled emerging victorious during the military era’s non-party, or zero-party, local government elections, saying voters supported him because of his leadership qualities and connection with the people.
‘Humility Has Always Been My Strength’
Speaking during the interview, Gwarzo maintained that humility has remained one of the defining characteristics of his leadership style.
“I believe I am more humble than Abba Kabir Yusuf. My strength has always been my humility, my capacity to lead, and my humanity. The people have consistently supported me because they know my commitment to serving them,” he said.
He added that leadership should be evaluated based on service delivery, accessibility and the positive impact made on the lives of citizens.
Former Deputy Governor Highlights ALGON Role
Gwarzo also cited his election as Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) as evidence of the confidence reposed in him by his colleagues and the people he served.
According to him, the position reflected recognition of his leadership qualities and experience in public administration.
Calls for Grassroots-Oriented Governance
The former deputy governor urged political office holders to remain connected to the grassroots and place greater emphasis on policies that improve the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.
He argued that effective governance requires leaders to remain accessible and responsive to the needs of their constituents.
Political Reactions Awaited
Gwarzo’s remarks have generated debate within Kano’s political landscape as stakeholders continue to assess leadership styles and governance in the state.
As Nigeria News Today follows developments in Kano politics, The Bureau Journal notes that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had not publicly responded to Gwarzo’s comments at the time this report was filed.
The Bureau Journal will update this report if the Kano State governor or his representatives issue an official reaction.
