As Gombe State looks towards the 2027 governorship election, the debate over its next leadership should centre on a practical question: who has the experience, judgement and commitment to expand opportunities for the people?
For supporters of Dr Jamil Isyaku Gwamna, popularly known as Sardaunan Gombe, his appeal rests on his corporate leadership background and the employment opportunities associated with his work in the electricity sector.
His supporters credit him with helping more than 1,800 Gombe indigenes secure employment through KEDCO and KAEDCO. That figure represents a significant part of the case they make for his political prospects: an ability to connect people with opportunities that improve their livelihoods.
Why employment matters
A job can change the circumstances of an entire household. It can help a young graduate build a career, enable a parent to pay school fees and give a family a more dependable income.
For a state seeking to expand economic opportunities, the value of employment extends beyond individual beneficiaries. Workers spend their earnings in local markets, support relatives and contribute to the businesses and services around them.
This is why Gwamna’s reported role in facilitating employment deserves attention in discussions about his suitability for public office. It offers a concrete starting point for examining his contribution to human development.
His stated commitment to youth development, mentorship and human capital investment provides a further basis for assessing how he intends to expand those opportunities.
What corporate experience could offer Gombe
Gwamna’s corporate background is another important part of his appeal. Leading an organisation requires planning, managing resources, developing teams and taking responsibility for decisions.
Those skills have clear relevance to government. Public institutions need leadership that can set priorities, coordinate implementation and assess whether spending is producing useful results.
Corporate experience also brings familiarity with the challenges businesses face. Understanding those challenges can help shape policies that encourage investment, support enterprise and create employment.
Supporters point to opportunities for professional advancement under Gwamna’s leadership at KEDCO as evidence of his interest in developing people. Their argument is that identifying talent and helping it grow should also be central to public administration.
Building participation across communities
Development also depends on giving different groups opportunities to contribute. The women’s unity summit convened by Zainab Gwamna, which reportedly attracted more than 6,000 participants, brought questions of mentorship, economic empowerment and community participation into that conversation.
Such engagement matters because policies work best when they reflect the experiences of the people they are intended to serve. Women, young people, professionals and business owners all have practical knowledge that can inform development priorities.
Gwamna’s political outreach has also attracted established stakeholders, including members of the late Governor Abubakar Habu Hashidu’s political family who declared support for him.
The decision of a former Pantami adviser to back Gwamna offers another example of the political alignments forming around his ambition.
Meanwhile, Gombe PDP youth leader Jamilu Ali Kalshingi’s resignation and anticipated move to support Gwamna has added a youth mobilisation dimension to the unfolding contest.
Turning experience into a development agenda
The strongest case for Gwamna would connect his experience with a clear programme for Gombe’s future.
Employment, education, skills development and stronger public institutions belong at the centre of that programme. Residents should be able to see how proposed policies would create opportunities across communities and help young people build productive lives within the state.
A convincing agenda would also explain how government could work with businesses and other institutions to widen access to training and employment. His existing experience offers a foundation for that conversation.
As political interest in Sardaunan Gombe grows, his supporters have an opportunity to build their argument around service, competence and measurable contributions.
For Gombe voters, the significance of his record lies in what it suggests about the future: the possibility of leadership that recognises talent, opens doors and makes economic opportunity a priority of government.
