The Kebbi State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has backed the endorsement of Governor Nasir Idris by the union’s National President, Comrade Audu Titus Amba, describing the remarks as a reflection of what it called the governor’s record in education and teachers’ welfare.
The Kebbi NUT chairman, Comrade Zaki Sarki SK, said the national president’s assessment of Governor Idris was supported by developments in the state’s education sector, particularly interventions in teachers’ welfare, school infrastructure and learning conditions.
Sarki made the position known in a statement issued on Friday in Birnin Kebbi while reacting to Titus Amba’s commendation of the governor.
Kebbi NUT Says Amba Witnessed Idris’ Education Reforms
Sarki said the Kebbi NUT was not surprised by the national president’s remarks, arguing that Amba had a longstanding knowledge of Governor Idris’ activities in the education sector.
He described Idris as a former teacher and unionist who, according to him, had taken steps aimed at improving conditions for teachers and students since becoming governor.
“At Kebbi NUT we are not surprised to hear such bare facts from our boss, because he is the product of Governor Idris and a living witness to what the teacher governor is doing in Kebbi since he took the mantle of leadership of Kebbi State,” Sarki said.
He added that the state NUT was backing both the national president and Governor Idris in their efforts to improve the welfare of teachers and strengthen education in the state.
Union Highlights School Construction, Renovation
According to the NUT chairman, the Kebbi Government has pursued the construction and renovation of schools as part of its education interventions.
He also said renovated schools had been furnished with furniture to improve the teaching and learning environment.
The union’s position comes against the backdrop of wider government and NUT claims about investment in education under the Idris administration. Recent reports have cited projects involving school construction, renovation, furniture and increased support for teachers.
The Bureau Journal recently reported that a Kebbi State Government committee reviewing the salary structure of primary school teachers identified more than 29,000 teachers and submitted recommendations to Governor Idris on salary administration and working conditions.
The report on the primary school teachers’ salary structure also noted that the governor said the monthly salary allocation for teachers had risen from about ₦586 million when he assumed office to more than ₦1.2 billion.
Kebbi NUT Points to Teacher Recruitment
Sarki also highlighted the recruitment of more than 2,000 teachers, describing the measure as part of the state government’s effort to expand access to education and address staffing needs in schools.
He said the recruitment was intended to help ensure that children of school age could access education across the state.
The NUT chairman further cited the government’s interventions in school feeding as part of the measures he said were improving the education sector.
Earlier reports have also documented NUT Kebbi’s praise of the administration for its education policies, including school infrastructure, teachers’ welfare and learning conditions. The union has continued to publicly support closer cooperation between teachers and the state government.
NUT Leadership Maintains Support for Governor
The latest statement represents another expression of support from the Kebbi NUT leadership for Governor Idris, who previously served as National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers.
The union has repeatedly linked the governor’s background in organised labour and teaching to policies concerning teachers and workers.
In May, the Kebbi NUT chapter also backed the adoption of Governor Idris as the All Progressives Congress (APC) consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election, citing his record in education, healthcare, infrastructure and workers’ welfare.
The Bureau Journal has also reported on the political contest taking shape ahead of 2027, including the emergence of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, as a major opposition figure in Kebbi.
In its report on the developing contest, The Bureau Journal examined the competing arguments around Governor Idris’ record and Malami’s political profile, noting that claims made by supporters of either side should be assessed against verifiable records.
Teachers’ Welfare Remains Central to NUT Position
The Kebbi NUT’s latest intervention places teachers’ welfare at the centre of its assessment of the state government.
The union has previously highlighted measures relating to teachers’ salaries, retirement age, school feeding and infrastructure as areas where it believes the administration has made progress.
The Bureau Journal recently reported the state government’s salary review process for primary school teachers, including recommendations for improved personnel records and working conditions.
The union’s leadership has also continued to urge teachers to reciprocate government interventions with greater commitment to classroom duties and improved teaching standards.
Kebbi NUT Backs Continued Collaboration
Sarki said the Kebbi State NUT leadership would continue to support the national president and Governor Idris as they work towards improving the position of teachers and the education sector.
“Kebbi State leadership of NUT remains solidly behind the National President and the Governor of Kebbi State, Comrade Nasir Idris, as they strive to give teachers their deserving sense of belonging,” he said.
The statement adds to a series of public interventions by the Kebbi teachers’ union on education policies and the welfare of teachers in the state.
For the NUT leadership, the latest endorsement by its national president is consistent with its own assessment of the administration’s education interventions. The claims remain positions expressed by the union and its leadership.
