A Christian woman, Liyatu Samuel Dawa, has reportedly been sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment in Borno State in a case her family says arose from an adult woman’s voluntary conversion to Christianity.
Truth Nigeria reported that Justice A. B. Kumdila imposed the sentence under Section 210 of the Borno State Penal Code, with no option of a fine. The publication said it obtained a certified copy of the judgment.
Family Challenges Basis of Conviction
Dawa’s husband, Evangelist Amos Suleman, maintained that the woman involved was an adult who told the court she embraced Christianity willingly.
Gavvs Katiya, chairman of the Gwoza Refugees Resettlement Initiative, and lawyer Samuel John also questioned the conviction, according to the report. They argued that consensual religious discussions should not attract criminal punishment.
Husband Alleges Death Threats
Suleman said he had previously been detained, later obtained bail and was now hiding because of threats against his life.
“I’m on the run; my life is under threat,” he told Truth Nigeria.
He appealed for assistance for himself and his imprisoned wife.
The Bureau Journal has not independently examined the complete judgment or court record. The precise findings supporting the conviction, the prosecution’s account and the status of any appeal therefore remain unconfirmed.
