Kebbi State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris, has commended the state leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) over the reported 99 per cent implementation of consequential salary adjustments for primary school teachers.
The commendation recognised the efforts of the union, led by Comrade Zaki Sarki SK, in following up on the implementation of the adjustments across the state.
It came as the NUT embarked on a tour of the 21 local government education authorities to obtain feedback from teachers and identify outstanding concerns about the salary review.
The exercise follows earlier discussions about primary school teachers’ salaries under the Idris administration and the implementation of salary and allowance adjustments in Kebbi.
NUT Visits Education Authorities for Teachers’ Feedback
During the delegation’s visit to Birnin Kebbi, the Local Government Education Secretary, Hajiya Aishatu Gado Sahabi, thanked the union for monitoring the process and seeking to ensure that teachers received their entitlements.
She described the follow-up visits as important to addressing teachers’ concerns and ensuring fairness in the implementation exercise.
Gado also urged teachers to support Governor Idris’s second-term bid, saying his administration’s interventions were having a positive impact on education and other sectors.
She assured the delegation of support for its work and expressed backing for the governor’s return to office.
Union Links Endorsement to Support for Primary Education
Responding on behalf of the state NUT, Comrade Zaki said the union remained a professional organisation rather than a political party.
He nevertheless argued that endorsing Idris for a second term was a way of recognising the governor’s support for primary education and his fulfilment of the pledge to review teachers’ salaries upwards.
Zaki said the union would mobilise teachers to support the governor, linking its position to the welfare improvements recorded under his administration.
The position builds on the Kebbi NUT’s earlier support for Idris’s endorsement. Teachers’ welfare also featured in discussions surrounding World Teachers’ Day in the state.
The ongoing tour combines monitoring of the salary adjustments with engagements seeking teachers’ support for the governor ahead of the next election.
Labour organisations’ assessments of the administration’s welfare record have also formed part of the wider political debate, including responses to competing welfare pledges in Kebbi.
