The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced the constitution of its National Campaign Council for the 2027 general elections, naming party leader Senator Henry Seriake Dickson as chairman and presidential candidate Peter Obi as co-chairman.
In a statement announcing the council, the party said the body would provide strategic leadership, coordinate campaign activities nationwide and mobilise support for its political programme ahead of the elections.
Senator Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe, identified in the announcement as the NDC National Chairman, was named vice-chairman. Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the party’s vice-presidential candidate according to the statement, was also listed among the council’s principal leaders.
Barrister Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the NDC National Secretary, was named co-vice-chairman, while Mallam Ibrahim Hussain Abdulkarim was appointed council secretary and Director-General.
The party said the council would lead efforts to deliver what it described as a people-centred and issue-based campaign.
NDC Sets Out Campaign Priorities
In announcing the appointments, the NDC called on its members, supporters and Nigerians sympathetic to its political agenda to remain united as preparations for the 2027 general elections continue.
“A new and working Nigeria is possible,” the party declared in its statement.
The announcement comes as political parties and their candidates organise structures ahead of the next general elections. The NDC’s preparations have followed legal proceedings over its registration and participation in the electoral process.
The Bureau Journal previously reported that the Court of Appeal overturned a judgment that had threatened the NDC’s registration, allowing the party to continue its preparations for the 2027 elections, subject to any further legal proceedings.
Obi and Kwankwaso Named in Campaign Leadership
The inclusion of Obi and Kwankwaso places two prominent opposition politicians in the leadership structure outlined by the party. The NDC said the campaign council would coordinate mobilisation and campaign activities across the country.
Both politicians have featured prominently in reporting on the evolving political landscape ahead of 2027. The Bureau Journal’s guide to the 2027 general elections and electoral reforms examines the wider political environment and the issues expected to shape the contest.
Obi’s emergence as the NDC’s presidential candidate has also attracted attention amid continuing scrutiny of political alliances and candidate-related issues. In a separate report, The Bureau Journal examined the implications of the Supreme Court’s ruling on party membership registers and nominations ahead of the 2027 elections. The ruling restored key provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 but did not, by itself, disqualify Obi or the other politicians discussed in that report.
Campaign Council to Coordinate Nationwide Mobilisation
The NDC said the council would coordinate its activities across the country and help communicate the party’s vision to voters. Its announcement did not provide a detailed list of the council’s other members, committee assignments, campaign timetable or planned state-level structures.
The effectiveness of the council will depend in part on how the party translates the announced leadership structure into coordinated organisation, public engagement and clearly communicated policy proposals.
In its coverage of the developing campaign environment, The Bureau Journal has also reported on Peter Obi’s call for political debate to focus on governance records, policy and national priorities.
Obi has also faced legal scrutiny over requests for access to his academic records. The Bureau Journal reported on the court cases seeking access to records held by WAEC, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and the National Youth Service Corps. Those proceedings concern requests for disclosure of records and should not be treated as a judicial finding that Obi is unqualified to contest.
Party Calls for Unity Ahead of 2027
The NDC urged party members and supporters to remain focused as it prepares for the election campaign. It also appealed to Nigerians of voting age to participate in the democratic process and support candidates they believe can deliver on their responsibilities.
The party’s announcement marks a further organisational step in its preparations for 2027. Details of the council’s wider membership and the activities it will undertake are yet to be provided in the statement.
The National Campaign Council is expected to serve as the party’s central structure for coordinating campaign activities as the election approaches.
