Five people have died after three trucks collided and caught fire along the Obajana–Lokoja highway in Kogi State.
The Kogi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lawal Fagge, confirmed the incident on Monday, saying the crash occurred at about 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, October 18, 2026.
According to Fagge, one person sustained injuries while another escaped unhurt.
Collision Triggers Fire
Eyewitnesses said the trucks were travelling at high speed when their drivers reportedly lost control and collided.
The impact sparked a fire that engulfed the vehicles, destroying the trucks, their cargo and other belongings.
The injured survivor was taken to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja, for treatment, while the bodies of the five deceased victims were deposited in the hospital’s morgue.
FRSC Attributes Crash to Speeding
Fagge attributed the collision to excessive speed and loss of control.
The early-morning crash has again drawn attention to the risks associated with heavy-duty vehicle collisions, particularly when a fire leaves occupants with little opportunity to escape.
The Bureau Journal’s guide to FRSC traffic offences and penalties outlines road safety requirements, including those concerning speed violations, dangerous driving and mechanically deficient vehicles.
Renewed Concern Over Highway Safety
The latest fatalities add to concerns about safety on major transport routes through Kogi, which connect several parts of the country.
Road infrastructure has also featured in state government deliberations, including discussions about the reconstruction of the Abuja–Lokoja–Okene–Benin highway.
Beyond infrastructure, preventing collisions requires drivers to observe speed limits, maintain safe distances and ensure their vehicles are fit for the road.
The identities of those killed and the condition of the injured survivor were not provided in the account of the crash.
