Terrorists have abducted four students, the principal of Government Secondary School (GSS), Olowa, and a National Examinations Council (NECO) ad hoc staff member during an attack on the school in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The incident occurred at about 5:25 p.m. on Tuesday while candidates were writing the ongoing National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination.
According to security sources, the armed assailants invaded the school premises, abducted the victims, and fled to an unknown destination before security operatives could respond.
One Student Rescued as Security Forces Intensify Search
Following the attack, a combined team of security personnel launched a coordinated search-and-rescue operation across the area.
Security operatives have deployed intelligence assets and commenced extensive bush-combing operations to locate the kidnappers and rescue the remaining victims.
Sources confirmed that one of the abducted students has already been rescued, while efforts are ongoing to secure the safe release of the other three students, the school principal, and the NECO ad hoc official.
Security Agencies Step Up Surveillance
Security agencies have intensified surveillance and intelligence gathering as investigations into the incident continue.
Authorities are also working to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack, which has heightened concerns over the safety of schools and examination centres in parts of the country.
Renewed Concerns Over School Security
The latest abduction comes amid growing concerns over attacks on educational institutions in Nigeria, particularly in areas facing security challenges.
Education stakeholders have repeatedly called for stronger security measures around schools, especially during national examinations, to protect students, teachers and examination officials.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kogi State Government and security authorities had yet to issue an official statement providing further details on the incident or the ongoing rescue operation.
