The death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar in bandits’ captivity has triggered renewed calls for unity among Northerners as stakeholders intensify demands for stronger action against insecurity across the region.
Major General Abubakar, a former director of defense information, reportedly died while in captivity after being abducted by armed bandits in Katsina State. His death has drawn widespread condemnation and reignited concerns over the persistent security challenges facing communities in Northern Nigeria.
Reacting to the development, public affairs commentator Suleiman Ahmad urged Northerners to put aside political differences and work together in support of ongoing efforts to combat terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of criminality threatening the region.
According to him, the tragedy should serve as a wake-up call for leaders and citizens alike to unite against a common enemy rather than allowing political sentiments to create divisions at a critical time.
“The fight against insecurity requires collective responsibility. We must not allow our differences to distract us from the urgent task of supporting efforts to restore peace and stability in our communities,” he said.
Ahmad expressed confidence in the commitment of the federal government, the Office of the National Security Adviser, and the defense headquarters to address the growing security concerns across the Northwest and other affected regions.
He commended the sacrifices being made by security personnel and called on citizens to support the authorities through cooperation, intelligence sharing, and prayers for the success of ongoing operations.
“Our unity at this moment is more important than ever. We must stand behind our security institutions and work together to defeat those who continue to threaten innocent lives. A divided society cannot effectively confront terrorism and banditry,” he stated.
The National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has continued to coordinate efforts aimed at tackling insecurity across the country. Ahmad noted that such efforts require the backing of all Nigerians, particularly those living in communities directly affected by criminal activities.
Security analysts have repeatedly emphasized that meaningful progress in the fight against insecurity can only be achieved through collaboration between government institutions, security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and local communities.
As family members, colleagues, and citizens mourn the loss of Major General Rabe Abubakar, many believe his death should strengthen the resolve of Nigerians to support ongoing efforts to end banditry and restore lasting peace in the North.
The incident serves as another painful reminder of the challenges confronting the nation and the urgent need for sustained unity in the collective fight against terror and insecurity.
