A Nigerian woman identified as Umar Khadijatu Nana has alleged that her brother’s second wife left the marriage after transmitting HIV to him and his first wife.
According to a report by Linda Ikeji’s Blog, Nana made the allegation while responding to a social-media post by Farouk Alrem Al-Egbaawiy, described as an Ogun-based imam and medical physicist, about rules governing polygamous marriages.
The account did not provide medical records or other evidence establishing the alleged transmission. It also did not include responses from the brother or either wife.
HIV testing establishes infection status; it does not, by itself, identify who transmitted the virus. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also explains that even molecular HIV sequence analysis cannot determine whether a specific person transmitted HIV to another.
