Kogi State’s registered voters have risen to 2,232,398 ahead of the 2027 general elections, an increase of 299,744 voters compared with the register used for the 2023 governorship election.
The updated figure was contained in a nationwide breakdown published by The Guardian on Tuesday, October 6, citing data from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Expanded Register Places Voter Participation in Focus
The increase gives Kogi a larger potential electorate as political parties prepare for the presidential and legislative elections in 2027.
However, the number of registered voters does not establish how many people will vote. PVC collection, accreditation and turnout will determine how much of the expanded register translates into participation on election day.
The importance of completing the electoral process has already featured in Admiral Usman Jibrin’s appeal to Kogites and other Nigerians to take PVC collection seriously.
Earlier, The Bureau Journal reported on Muhammed Abdullahi’s mobilisation of eligible residents across Kogi East to secure their voter cards, reflecting efforts to encourage participation at the grassroots.
Updated Breakdown for Kogi’s 21 LGAs Awaited
A review of INEC’s public statistics page by The Bureau Journal found that the Kogi polling-unit document currently available remains labelled for the 2023 governorship election.
An updated 2026 breakdown covering the state’s 21 local government areas was not located during the review. The statewide increase therefore cannot yet be assigned to individual LGAs or used to establish changes in the relative electoral strength of Kogi East, Kogi Central and Kogi West.
The detailed figures would show whether registration growth has been concentrated in the larger voting centres or distributed more evenly across the state.
Voters also need to monitor changes affecting their representation. The Bureau Journal previously reported on INEC’s restoration of four State Assembly constituencies in Kogi and Delta, including Yagba West II in Kogi.
INEC Schedules Register Scrutiny for October 9–15
INEC has scheduled the nationwide display of the voter register for October 9 to 15, 2026, allowing voters to inspect their details and raise claims or objections.
The final register for the 2027 general elections is expected to be presented to political parties on December 15, according to Premium Times’ report of the commission’s briefing.
The exercise forms part of wider election preparations, alongside INEC’s recruitment of ad hoc staff for the 2027 polls.
For registered voters, the immediate priority is to follow official instructions, verify their registration details and complete the applicable PVC collection procedures. The Bureau Journal’s 2027 general elections voters’ guide provides further background on electoral participation and preparations.
Kogi’s reported increase of almost 300,000 registered voters marks a substantial expansion of its potential electorate. Publication of the updated local government figures will establish where that growth occurred and provide a firmer basis for analysing the state’s electoral distribution.
