Amnesty International has called for a thorough and impartial investigation into the reported killing of social media political commentator Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu in Kano State.
Dan Shagamu was reportedly found dead in a pool of blood at his residence in Gaida, Kano, after unidentified assailants allegedly attacked him.
Amnesty Demands Independent Investigation
The human rights organisation condemned the reported killing and urged Nigerian authorities to establish exactly what happened, identify those responsible and ensure that anyone found culpable is prosecuted.
Amnesty International described the circumstances surrounding Dan Shagamu’s death as deeply concerning and called for an investigation that is thorough, impartial and transparent.
According to the organisation, the political commentator was allegedly overpowered and brutally killed by unidentified assailants before his body was discovered at his home.
However, the circumstances of the killing and the identity of the perpetrators remain subject to investigation.
Rights Group Warns Over Attacks on Critics
Amnesty International stressed that people who express political opinions or criticise government policies should be able to do so without facing threats, intimidation or violence.
The organisation said freedom of expression is a fundamental element of a democratic society and that authorities have a responsibility to protect citizens who exercise that right.
The call comes as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 elections, with security and the protection of political actors becoming increasingly important issues across Nigeria.
The Bureau Journal recently reported on growing political activity ahead of the 2027 elections and the importance of peaceful political participation.
Concerns Over Security Ahead of 2027 Elections
Amnesty International also expressed concern over what it described as inadequate efforts to prevent killings, threats, intimidation and other serious human rights violations in Nigeria.
The organisation warned that politically motivated attacks could create an atmosphere of fear and undermine citizens’ ability to participate freely in democratic processes as the country approaches another election cycle.
The warning comes against the backdrop of wider security concerns across northern Nigeria. The Bureau Journal recently reported that reported attacks across four Kano local government areas had triggered fresh calls for an urgent security response.
In another recent Kano report, a suspected bandit attack in Rogo Local Government Area left a young resident dead and an APC chairman abducted, further highlighting security concerns in parts of the state.
Amnesty Calls for Perpetrators to Be Prosecuted
Amnesty International urged Nigerian authorities to identify, arrest and prosecute anyone found responsible for Dan Shagamu’s killing, regardless of the person’s identity or status.
The organisation said accountability should remain central to the government’s response to attacks against citizens.
It also called for urgent measures to protect political commentators, activists and other outspoken citizens from threats and violence.
The demand for accountability comes as Nigeria continues to debate changes to its security architecture. The Bureau Journal recently reported that the Senate passed the State Police constitutional amendment bill, a development linked to wider efforts to strengthen internal security and decentralise policing.
Freedom of Expression at the Centre of Concern
For Amnesty International, the reported killing raises concerns beyond the circumstances of one individual’s death.
The organisation said protecting freedom of expression and ensuring accountability for attacks on citizens are essential to safeguarding democracy and human rights.
Similar concerns over insecurity and the protection of communities have emerged across northern Nigeria. The Bureau Journal previously reported renewed calls for stronger action after the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar in bandits’ captivity triggered fresh demands for greater cooperation against terrorism, kidnapping and banditry.
The latest case has therefore placed renewed attention on the safety of outspoken citizens in Kano and the ability of law enforcement authorities to investigate politically sensitive killings effectively.
Authorities Yet to Establish Circumstances of Death
While Amnesty International has called for a transparent investigation, the identity of those responsible for Dan Shagamu’s reported killing and the precise circumstances surrounding his death remain to be established by the relevant authorities.
The outcome of any investigation will be crucial in determining what happened and whether the killing was connected to Dan Shagamu’s political commentary or other circumstances.
The Bureau Journal will continue to monitor developments and report any official findings from the police or other relevant authorities.
