BIRNIN KEBBI, Nigeria — Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has commenced visits to traditional rulers across the state to seek royal blessings for himself and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections, The Bureau Journal reports.
The visits began barely one week after Governor Idris emerged as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kebbi State.
Governor Visits Emir of Gwandu
The first leg of the tour took the governor to the palace of the Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji Muhammadu Ilyasu Bashar.
Governor Idris was accompanied by prominent APC stakeholders, including former Governor Ambassador Sa’idu Usman Nasamu Dakingari, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning Senator Atiku Abubakar Bagudu, APC State Chairman Alhaji Abubakar Muhammad Kana Zuru, political associates and supporters.
Purpose of the Royal Visit
Addressing the Emir, Governor Idris said the visit was to formally inform the traditional ruler about the decision of APC members in Kebbi State to endorse both him and President Tinubu for the 2027 elections.
He also requested prayers for divine guidance, peace and success as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the elections.
“We are here to seek prayers and blessings from the Royal Father for God’s guidance in our political activities,” Governor Idris stated.
Governor Clarifies Visit Was Not Campaign
The governor stressed that the palace visit should not be mistaken for political campaigning, noting that traditional rulers remain non-partisan and that official campaigns have not yet been approved by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He described the visit as part of a longstanding political tradition in the state.
According to him, similar visits were made by past leaders and presidential candidates, including former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Goodluck Jonathan, Muhammadu Buhari and President Tinubu.
Emir Urges Politicians to Serve People
Responding, the Emir of Gwandu, who also serves as Chairman of the Kebbi State Council of Chiefs, thanked the governor and his entourage for the visit.
The monarch prayed for peace and guidance while reminding politicians that voters are increasingly conscious of their democratic rights and expectations.
He urged leaders to focus on integrity, selfless service and people-oriented governance.
Governor Continues Tour to Argungu
After the Gwandu visit, Governor Idris proceeded to Argungu, where he met with the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Samaila Mera.
The Emir commended the administration’s development efforts and prayed for peaceful political activities and continued progress in the state.
Governor Idris is also expected to visit the Yauri and Zuru Emirates as part of the statewide consultation and blessing-seeking tour.
