A successful Nigerian passport application begins before payment. Applicants need consistent personal information, the correct supporting documents and an appointment at the processing centre selected during the application.
The official fee is only one part of preparation. Choosing the wrong application category or submitting conflicting records can create problems that paying an intermediary will not necessarily solve.
Here is what applicants should check.
What are the published passport fees?
The Nigeria Immigration Service announced the following standard passport application fees for applications made in Nigeria, effective September 1, 2025:
| Passport option | Published application fee |
|---|---|
| 32 pages, five-year validity | ₦100,000 |
| 64 pages, ten-year validity | ₦200,000 |
The announcement states that diaspora application fees remained $150 and $230 respectively.
The NIS April 2026 Service Level Agreement also lists the domestic fees and states that bank charges are excluded. Confirm the amount displayed through the official application process before paying.
Check eligibility for the selected booklet and validity period, especially when applying for a child.
Transport, photographs or assistance purchased separately should not be confused with the official passport application fee.
Start from the official NIS website
Visit the Nigeria Immigration Service website and follow its passport application link.
Avoid beginning from an unsolicited message or sponsored page whose connection to NIS you have not established. A copied logo does not authenticate a website.
Use an email address and telephone number you control. If someone assists you, retain access to your application and all receipts.
Check your identity information first
Review your name, date of birth and other identifying information before submission.
The NIS fresh-application instructions require NIN verification and a review of details drawn from the applicant’s NIMC record.
If a record is incorrect, establish the proper correction process. Do not create a second application with conflicting information as an improvised solution.
Keep spelling and name order consistent across the records used for the application, or obtain guidance on the documentation needed to explain a legitimate difference.
Prepare the documents for your application category
The NIS Service Level Agreement lists a NIN slip, birth certificate or qualifying declaration of age, local government or indigene certificate and an ICAO-compliant photograph among standard application requirements.
Renewal or reissue applications also require the existing passport where applicable.
Applications involving minors, lost passports or changes to personal data require category-specific checks. Use the checklist shown for your case rather than assuming an adult fresh-application checklist covers everyone.
Upload clear documents with readable names, dates and reference numbers.
Complete the application and attend enrolment
The published fresh-application process includes selecting a centre and booklet, supplying contact and next-of-kin information, uploading supporting documents, reviewing the application, paying and booking biometric enrolment.
Applicants must appear at the selected immigration office for biometric capture.
Save the application reference, payment evidence and appointment confirmation. Check the centre and date before travelling.
Understand when the processing clock starts
The April 2026 Service Level Agreement lists 42 days after successful enrolment for a fresh application and 21 days for renewal or reissue. These are published service timelines, not a guarantee of an individual collection date.
Successful enrolment is different from starting an online form or making payment.
When following up, identify the stage reached: submitted, paid, appointment booked, enrolled or awaiting issuance. This makes the enquiry easier to investigate.
Keep a record of every follow-up
If the application remains unresolved, contact the processing centre or use the official NIS enquiry and tracking channels.
Provide the reference number, centre, enrolment date and a concise explanation. Keep responses and any instructions to supply additional information.
Before buying a non-refundable ticket, establish that the passport has been issued and that its details are correct.
Information checked: September 30, 2026. Applicants should confirm current fees and category requirements through NIS before payment.
