Backlash as Murtala Ajaka Declares Support for Senator Echocho After Both Lost APC Kogi East Primary

LOKOJA, Nigeria — Political observers in Kogi State have reacted with surprise after Murtala Yakubu Ajaka announced his decision to support Senator Jibrin Isah Echocho in the aftermath of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary for the Kogi East Senatorial District.
The development has sparked debate because both Ajaka and Echocho were reportedly unsuccessful in the just-concluded APC primary election for the 2027 National Assembly race.
Analysts Question Timing of Ajaka’s Statement
Analysts described the announcement as unusual, noting that it is uncommon for a candidate who did not secure victory at the polls to publicly declare support for another aspirant who also failed to win the party ticket.
The APC primaries held across Nigeria in recent days were marked by disputes and controversies in several states, including Kogi.
Ajaka Says Decision Was Reached After Consultations
In a statement posted on his verified Facebook account on May 20, 2026, Ajaka said his senatorial ambition was driven by a desire to promote development, unity and effective representation for the people of Kogi East.
He explained that after extensive consultations with stakeholders, he decided to throw his support behind Senator Jibrin Isah Echocho.
“Though I may not agree with some of his leadership approaches, he remains the better alternative at this critical moment owing to his experience, political reach, ranking advantage and capacity to attract greater development and opportunities to our district,” Ajaka said.
Calls for Unity in Kogi East
Ajaka urged his supporters, party faithful, youths and women across the district to extend the same support they have shown him to Echocho in the interest of peace, unity and continued progress.
He said the decision was also intended to strengthen support for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.
Appeal to APC National Leadership
Ajaka further called on the national leadership of the APC to take a closer look at developments in Kogi State in order to preserve party unity and long-term stability.
His statement has added a new dimension to political discussions in Kogi East as party members and stakeholders continue to assess the outcome of the contentious primary election.
