The Kebbi State chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has announced plans to conduct local chapter elections across the state following the expiration of the tenure of existing local government executives.
The development, according to the council, is aimed at ensuring continuity in youth leadership and sustaining programmes already being implemented at the grassroots level.
Election Timetable Announced
Speaking during a media briefing held at the Kebbi State Ministry of Youth and Sports, the State Chairman of NYCN, Engineer Ahmed Rufai Abubakar Khalifa, said preparations for the polls had commenced in line with the council’s constitutional provisions.
He disclosed that the election notice takes effect from June 5, 2026, while the sale of nomination forms will begin on June 6, 2026.
According to him, voting for the local chapter elections is scheduled to hold between June 27 and June 28, 2026.
Khalifa explained that the exercise is necessary to usher in a new generation of youth leaders and maintain uninterrupted youth-focused programmes across the state.
Eligibility Requirements for Aspirants
The NYCN chairman stated that all aspirants must not be above 35 years of age and must be mentally, physically and educationally qualified to contest.
He added that prospective candidates must possess at least a school leaving certificate to be eligible for any elective position within the council.
Gender Inclusion Takes Centre Stage
Engineer Khalifa said the council is prioritising gender inclusion in the forthcoming elections by reserving strategic positions exclusively for women.
According to him, the office of Deputy Coordinator and two other executive positions have been set aside for female aspirants as part of efforts to promote equity and balanced representation.
He noted that the decision reflects the council’s commitment to encouraging greater participation of young women in leadership and decision-making processes.
Commendation for Governor Idris
Khalifa commended Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, for what he described as unwavering support for youth development and empowerment initiatives in the state.
He also appreciated the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Nura Fingila, as well as staff members of the ministry, for their contributions to the growth and success of the NYCN in Kebbi State.
The Bureau Journal reports that the council has continued to advocate for increased youth participation in governance and leadership across the state.
Call for Support Against Insecurity
The NYCN chairman urged young people across Kebbi State to support security agencies in combating crime and insecurity by providing credible and timely information.
He stressed that sustained peace and security remain essential for the development of communities and the successful implementation of youth programmes.
According to him, active collaboration between citizens and security agencies will help strengthen safety and stability across Kebbi State.
