LAGOS, Nigeria — Lagos lawmaker and Nollywood actor, Desmond Elliot, has explained his involvement in the impeachment process involving the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, saying he signed the notice in what he described as a moment of confusion.
Elliot said he was out of the country at the time of the initial proceedings and returned to find that legislative actions regarding the speaker’s removal had already begun.
Elliot Explains Circumstances Around Signature
According to him, he was in South Africa for a wedding when the impeachment process commenced and was not fully briefed on the developments before returning to Nigeria.
He said upon his return, he met colleagues already signing documents related to the process and assumed the directive was backed by higher authority.
“I was in South Africa for a wedding when the impeachment of Obasa commenced. I was confused when I returned. I saw my colleagues signing and I signed too thinking the order was from the presidency until the president called us to return the speaker which we did,” Elliot said.
Political Reversal and Legislative Tensions
The development comes amid ongoing political tensions within the Lagos State legislature, where leadership disputes have previously triggered internal party interventions and reconciliations.
Following the reported intervention from political authorities, lawmakers later moved to restore Obasa to his position as Speaker of the House.
Background to the Assembly Crisis
The Lagos State House of Assembly has experienced periodic leadership tensions in recent years, often reflecting broader political alignments within the state’s ruling party structure.
Such disputes are typically resolved through internal party mechanisms and consultations involving senior political stakeholders.
Clarification and Aftermath
Elliot’s comments suggest that misunderstandings and procedural confusion played a role in the initial phase of the impeachment process, though the final outcome saw a reversal of the decision.
As of now, there has been no formal statement indicating fresh disciplinary actions arising from the incident.
