A former mayor in the United States, Mike Arnold, has publicly opposed any potential political alliance between former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections, The Bureau Journal reports.
Arnold made the remarks in a lengthy statement posted on his X account on Monday night, where he criticised the idea of an Obi–Kwankwaso presidential ticket and raised several allegations against the former Kano governor.
Arnold Rejects Obi–Kwankwaso Ticket
In the statement, Arnold said he would oppose any political arrangement involving Kwankwaso as a running mate or key partner to Peter Obi.
“No, I am not ok with Obi-Kwankwaso — and you shouldn’t be, either,” Arnold wrote.
He argued that Nigeria should avoid what he described as a continuation of old political structures under a new alliance.
“Nigeria does not need more of the same,” he added.
Allegations Against Kwankwaso
Arnold made several allegations against Kwankwaso, including claims relating to political loyalty, religious policies, and alleged corruption cases.
He accused the former Kano governor of maintaining close ties with the Sultanate establishment despite changing political parties multiple times over the years.
The former mayor also criticised Kwankwaso’s role in implementing Sharia law and establishing the Hisbah Board during his tenure as governor of Kano State.
Arnold further referenced past investigations and allegations involving pension fund management and procurement contracts linked to associates of the former governor.
Claims Remain Unverified
Many of the claims made by Arnold, including allegations relating to terrorism links, military operations, and past aviation incidents, remain unverified and highly controversial.
Neither Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso nor his political associates had publicly responded to the statement as of the time of filing this report.
Peter Obi has also not commented on the remarks or on any potential alliance with Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 elections.
Political Realignments Ahead of 2027
Speculation over possible alliances among opposition political figures has intensified in recent months as discussions around the 2027 presidential race continue to gain momentum.
Political observers say coalition talks among major opposition figures could shape the direction of Nigeria’s next general elections.
