A Flydubai flight carrying passengers from Dubai to Tel Aviv was diverted to Saudi Arabia after a violent incident reportedly broke out between the pilots, triggering emergency signals and briefly raising fears of a hijacking.
Flight FZ1073, which departed Dubai International Airport for Ben Gurion Airport in Israel on Wednesday, September 30, landed safely at Tabuk Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia after the incident.
Flydubai confirmed that the aircraft experienced an incident while en route and said all passengers were safe and accounted for. The airline said its teams were working with the relevant authorities as investigations continued.
What Happened Inside the Flydubai Cockpit?
Israeli officials and local media reports said a physical confrontation broke out between the two pilots while the aircraft was heading towards Tel Aviv.
Reuters reported that the co-pilot allegedly stabbed the captain during the confrontation, while other reports said one of the pilots was restrained after the incident. Both pilots were reportedly taken for medical treatment after the aircraft landed in Tabuk.
Passengers also reportedly described hearing screams and seeing signs of blood near the front of the aircraft, although the precise sequence of events inside the cockpit remained under investigation.
Flydubai itself has not publicly provided details about what happened between the pilots, saying only that an incident occurred during the flight and that further updates would be issued when additional information was confirmed.

Emergency Code Triggered Hijacking Fears
The situation escalated when the aircraft transmitted emergency transponder signals while flying over the region.
According to flight-tracking data, FZ1073 first transmitted code 7700, the internationally recognised signal for a general emergency. It subsequently switched to code 7500, which indicates unlawful interference with an aircraft and is commonly associated with a hijacking situation, before returning to 7700.
The change in signals prompted Israeli authorities to treat the aircraft as a potential security threat while its location and circumstances were assessed.

Plane Suddenly Descended Thousands of Feet
Flight-tracking data showed the Boeing 737 MAX 8 making a rapid descent during the emergency.
The aircraft dropped from roughly 33,000 feet to about 17,000 feet within a short period before continuing towards Saudi Arabia. The plane subsequently made a turn near the Jordanian border before heading towards Tabuk.
The dramatic change in altitude added to concerns about what was happening aboard the aircraft and prompted heightened monitoring by authorities.

Israeli Fighter Jets Were Scrambled
Israel responded to the hijacking alert by scrambling fighter aircraft as the Flydubai jet approached the region.
Israeli authorities feared the possibility that the aircraft had been unlawfully taken over, particularly because it was carrying a large number of Israeli passengers and had transmitted the 7500 emergency code.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also held urgent security consultations after the incident was reported.
Netanyahu’s office later said the situation was under control and that efforts were being made to bring the Israeli passengers back home.

Why the Flight Landed in Saudi Arabia
Rather than continuing towards Ben Gurion Airport, the aircraft diverted to Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia.
The choice of Tabuk provided the aircraft with a nearby airport where it could make an emergency landing after the incident.
The plane landed safely, and Flydubai confirmed that passengers and crew were accounted for.
The incident is particularly notable because the aircraft was carrying Israeli passengers into Saudi territory, despite the absence of formal diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel.
Was It Really a Hijacking?
The emergency code initially raised the possibility of a hijacking, but subsequent reporting focused on the alleged confrontation between the pilots.
Israeli officials have described the incident as a serious security event and have investigated whether the reported actions of one of the pilots were deliberate. Reuters reported that Israeli officials were examining the possibility of an attempted terror attack, although the motive had not been conclusively established.
Other reports have described the incident as a cockpit fight rather than a conventional hijacking. The precise circumstances, including why the confrontation began and how the emergency signals were activated, remain subject to investigation.
Passengers Safe After Terrifying Flight
Despite the rapid descent, emergency signals and reported violence in the cockpit, the aircraft reached Tabuk safely.
Flydubai said all passengers were safe and accounted for after landing.
Reports put the number of people aboard the aircraft at roughly 170 to 180, although figures varied across early reports. The majority of the passengers were reported to be Israeli nationals.
Passengers reportedly remained on board under the watch of Saudi security personnel while arrangements were made following the emergency landing.
Investigation Continues
The incident remains under investigation by relevant authorities, with several key questions still unanswered.
These include what triggered the confrontation, which pilot allegedly initiated the violence, why the 7500 hijacking code was transmitted and whether the incident was deliberate.
For now, the confirmed facts are that Flydubai flight FZ1073 experienced an onboard incident, transmitted multiple emergency signals, diverted from its Dubai-to-Tel Aviv route and landed safely at Tabuk Airport. Details surrounding the alleged stabbing and the motive remain under investigation.
The incident adds another unusual chapter to the security challenges surrounding commercial aviation in the Middle East, where flights can cross multiple jurisdictions within a matter of hours. The Bureau Journal continues to track major developments in World News and international affairs.
The development also comes as international trade and cross-border movement remain major issues across the global economy. The Bureau Journal recently reported on global goods trade reaching $13.7 trillion in the first half of 2026.
