A new grassroots mobilisation campaign has begun operations across Northern Nigeria, with organisers planning to take discussions on government policies, public programmes and the 2027 political process directly to villages and remote communities.
The Chairman of the group, Suleiman Ahmad, disclosed this in a press statement issued on Wednesday, saying the campaign would engage residents in villages and hamlets across the region.
According to Ahmad, members of the organisation will communicate with communities in local languages while explaining government policies, programmes and reported achievements in formats residents can easily understand.
Campaign to Combine Political Mobilisation With Civic Engagement
Ahmad said the initiative would not focus exclusively on political mobilisation but would also seek to promote public discussion about governance and government programmes.
He said residents would be provided with what the organisation described as verified information while communities would have opportunities to ask questions about government policies and their implementation.
“Our responsibility is not only to mobilise people politically, but also to promote responsible civic engagement, good governance and access to credible information at the grassroots,” he said.
The campaign’s approach comes as political organisations and support groups increasingly build grassroots structures ahead of the 2027 general elections. The Bureau Journal recently examined the growing importance of grassroots communication in Tinubu’s 2027 political campaign structure, including efforts to communicate government policies beyond major urban centres.
Communities to Raise Local Issues
According to the chairman, the campaign will also use its community engagements to draw attention to issues affecting residents, including infrastructure, education, healthcare, employment, agriculture, security, water supply and economic opportunities.
He said grassroots residents should have an opportunity to communicate their concerns to government institutions and receive information about programmes being implemented in their communities.
The emphasis on two-way communication distinguishes the initiative, at least in its stated objectives, from a campaign based solely on political messaging.
Similar questions about the relationship between government communication and public understanding have featured in recent political discussions. The Bureau Journal reported recently on Nyesom Wike’s position on supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu while maintaining that political parties should continue to field candidates in other 2027 contests.
Group Says It Will Counter Misinformation
Ahmad also said the campaign would promote fact-based communication and discourage the spread of misinformation.
He said citizens would be encouraged to independently assess claims concerning government policies and reported achievements rather than accepting political information without scrutiny.
The issue of information verification is becoming increasingly significant as political activity ahead of 2027 expands across traditional media, community networks and social-media platforms.
The Bureau Journal has previously reported on the Presidency’s response to viral claims about an alleged constitutional proposal, highlighting the importance of distinguishing official statements from unverified political claims circulating online.
Campaign Backs Tinubu Ahead of 2027
Ahmad said the group intends to mobilise grassroots support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
He nevertheless maintained that political engagement should be accompanied by civic education and discussions about issues that directly affect ordinary Nigerians.
The campaign’s stated position places it within a wider network of political organisations and support groups that have begun preparing for the 2027 elections.
The Bureau Journal recently reported on calls by APC chieftain Haruna Kabiru Wakili for support for Tinubu and APC candidates, while also noting the broader political debate over candidates, policies and government performance.
Other support organisations have similarly begun developing structures around the president. The Bureau Journal previously reported on the reported appointment of Kogi BAT Vanguard National Convener Olusola Olofin to the 2027 Presidential Campaign Council.
Grassroots Structures Expand Across Northern Nigeria
The new campaign is expected to work with community stakeholders, local media practitioners and grassroots organisations as it expands its activities across Northern Nigeria.
Its organisers said the strategy would enable them to reach communities that may not have regular access to national political events or mainstream media platforms.
The development comes against a backdrop of increasingly organised political activity across the North. The Bureau Journal has also reported on grassroots mobilisation by Senator Isah Jibrin Echocho during the APC’s presidential primary process in Kogi East.
2027 Political Activity Gathers Pace
Political parties, campaign organisations and individual politicians are already positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections, with presidential, governorship and legislative contests generating increasing activity.
Recent political developments have included competing alliances, campaign appointments, candidate selections and efforts by political actors to build support structures at state and community levels.
The grassroots campaign announced by Ahmad is expected to continue across Northern Nigeria, with organisers saying they will engage communities directly and work with local stakeholders as the programme expands.
Its activities will therefore form part of the wider political mobilisation taking place ahead of 2027, while the issues raised during community engagements could also provide an indication of the concerns residents want political organisations and government institutions to address.
