ABUJA, Nigeria — The Presidency has dismissed reports alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu plans to transmit a controversial constitutional amendment proposal known as “Project True Federation” to the National Assembly ahead of the general elections, The Bureau Journal reports.
The Presidency described the viral claims as false, misleading and aimed at creating tension within the country.
Presidency Rejects Viral Claims
In a statement issued on Thursday, Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said there was no plan by President Tinubu to sponsor any bill seeking to rename Nigeria the “United States of Nigeria” or abolish Sharia Law in northern Nigeria.
He urged Nigerians to disregard the circulating reports in their entirety.
“The purveyors of this fake news are agents of destabilisation and merchants of disorder,” Onanuga stated.
Claims Described as Political Misinformation
According to the Presidency, the report relied on anonymous sources and formed part of attempts by desperate political actors to create disaffection and trigger political tension ahead of the elections.
Onanuga said constitutional amendments in Nigeria are governed by strict legal procedures and cannot be altered arbitrarily.
Constitutional Amendment Process Explained
The Presidential aide explained that constitutional amendments require broad legislative support, including approval by two-thirds of members in both chambers of the National Assembly and endorsement by at least 24 state Houses of Assembly.
He stressed that such changes are not carried out at the discretion of the President or lawmakers alone.
Tinubu Focused on Economic Reforms
Onanuga said President Tinubu remains focused on implementing economic reforms and delivering governance priorities rather than pursuing divisive constitutional agendas.
He added that the administration is committed to improving the lives of Nigerians through ongoing economic and development programmes.
Nigerians Warned Against Fake News
The Presidency also warned Nigerians to be cautious about misinformation and divisive political content as the country gradually moves toward another election cycle.
Officials noted that fake reports and politically motivated propaganda are expected to increase during campaign periods.
