Former Kano State Governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, has declared that Northern Nigeria is ready to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
Shekarau made the declaration while leading political figures from the region to the inauguration of the Arewa for Asiwaju support group in Abuja, where they met with Vice President Kashim Shettima.
The gathering brought together stakeholders seeking to strengthen support for Tinubu across northern states ahead of the general elections.
Arewa for Asiwaju Seeks Regional Mobilisation
The platform is intended to coordinate political engagement and mobilisation among supporters of the President.
Shekarau’s declaration adds to ongoing grassroots efforts to build support for Tinubu in northern Nigeria.
His participation alongside other political figures signals an effort to bring regional stakeholders together around the President’s re-election campaign.
Northern Electorate Central to Campaign Calculations
Northern states account for a substantial share of Nigeria’s electorate, as detailed in the state-by-state breakdown of registered voters.
Shekarau’s statement expresses the position advanced at the gathering, while the election will determine the level of support among voters.
Economic conditions, security concerns and political alliances remain issues around which competing parties are presenting their cases. Tinubu has defended his administration’s policies in his Independence Day address on economic reforms, while opposition candidate Atiku Abubakar has outlined proposals on fuel policy and domestic refining.
Political Groups Expand Engagement Ahead of 2027
The inauguration and meeting with Shettima form part of preparations by support groups seeking to organise voters ahead of the polls.
The opposition has also established campaign structures, including the ADC presidential campaign council.
For Arewa for Asiwaju, the next phase will involve translating the backing expressed by participating political leaders into engagement with communities and voters across the region.
