Bayero University, Kano (BUK), has received agricultural mechanisation equipment worth N40 million from the Women Farmers Advancement Network (WOFAN) under the SIBLING Initiative, in a move aimed at strengthening practical agricultural training and promoting agribusiness entrepreneurship among students.
The donation is expected to provide students with hands-on experience in modern agricultural practices while equipping them with practical skills that can support employment creation, entrepreneurship and improved food production.
The agricultural equipment donated to the university includes a 40-horsepower tractor with implements, power tillers, fertiliser applicators, tricycle carriers, solar-powered sprayers, as well as rice and maize processing machines.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, WOFAN Group Executive Board Chair, Dr. Salamatu Garba, said the intervention was designed to strengthen practical agricultural education and prepare students for opportunities within the agricultural value chain.
She explained that access to modern agricultural equipment would enable students to acquire practical skills while also encouraging them to explore agribusiness as a viable career and entrepreneurship pathway.
Dr. Garba encouraged the beneficiaries to use the equipment responsibly and ensure that the intervention delivers benefits beyond the university community by offering mechanisation services to surrounding farming communities.
According to her, the initiative is expected to contribute to employment creation, improved agricultural productivity and food security while helping to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical experience.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Academic), Prof. Amina Mustapha, expressed appreciation to WOFAN for the donation and its continued support for agricultural development and practical education.
Prof. Mustapha assured the organisation that the university would ensure the donated equipment is properly maintained and effectively utilised for the benefit of students and the wider community.
The latest intervention builds on WOFAN’s earlier support to the university, including the donation of agricultural inputs valued at N28 million for the 2026 wet season.
The continued partnership between BUK and WOFAN is expected to strengthen practical agricultural education, promote youth empowerment and create new opportunities for students to develop skills in mechanisation, food processing and agribusiness.
With agriculture remaining a major driver of Nigeria’s economy and food security, initiatives that expose young people to modern farming technologies and practical enterprise development could play an important role in preparing a new generation of agricultural professionals and entrepreneurs.
