The Kebbi State Government has dissolved the governing board of the Kebbi State Independent Electoral Commission (KEBSIEC), with the decision taking effect on September 18, 2026.
The development was disclosed in a letter signed by the Secretary to the Kebbi State Government, Alhaji Yakubu Bala Tafida, and made available to journalists.
According to the statement, Governor Nasir Idris approved the dissolution following the expiration of the tenure of the commission’s governing board.
“His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kebbi State, Dr. Nasir Idris, has approved the dissolution of the Governing Board of the Kebbi State Independent Electoral Commission following the expiration of its tenure, with effect from September 18, 2026,” the letter stated.
The latest development comes as political activities continue to gather momentum in Kebbi ahead of the 2027 elections. The Bureau Journal recently reported that Kebbi APC stakeholders endorsed Governor Nasir Idris for another term.
The government, however, clarified that the two other members of the commission whose tenure has not yet expired will remain in office.
The affected members are expected to continue serving until the commission is reconstituted.
The dissolution also comes against the backdrop of wider efforts by the Nasir Idris administration to strengthen state institutions. The government recently announced measures aimed at strengthening treasury operations and financial accountability in Kebbi.
Governor Idris expressed appreciation to the outgoing members of KEBSIEC for what the government described as their meritorious service to the state.
He also assured them that his administration remained committed to protecting the independence and integrity of the electoral commission.
“I am assuring you of the renewed determination of this administration to protect the independent status of the Commission,” the governor said.
The development is taking place at a time when the political landscape in Kebbi is becoming increasingly active ahead of 2027. The Bureau Journal has also reported on Governor Nasir Idris’ engagements with traditional rulers ahead of the 2027 elections.
Opposition activities are also developing across the state, with the Kebbi ADC Elders Council recently responding to reports of an alleged rift within the opposition camp.
Meanwhile, Governor Idris’ administration has continued to highlight institutional and developmental initiatives across the state. Recent reports have covered Kebbi’s development journey and the evolution of its state institutions, as well as the administration’s efforts to improve internally generated revenue through its IGR and tax reform strategy.
The dissolution of the KEBSIEC governing board will formally take effect on September 18, 2026.
The next step will be the reconstitution of the commission, while the two members whose tenure remains valid are expected to continue in office until that process is completed.
The Bureau Journal will continue to monitor developments surrounding the reconstitution of KEBSIEC and any further announcement from the Kebbi State Government.
