ABUJA, Nigeria — Vice President Kashim Shettima has revealed that certain individuals attempted to sow distrust between him and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu just three months after they assumed office in 2023.
Shettima made the disclosure while speaking at the launch of “My Life of Duty and Allegiance,” the autobiography of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon.
‘False Allegations Were Taken to the President’
According to the Vice President, unnamed individuals allegedly told President Tinubu that he was planning to assassinate him in order to take over power.
He said the claims were reportedly made by persons from Borno State, but noted that the President dismissed the allegations after reviewing the information.
“Three months into our swearing-in, some people told Tinubu I was planning to kill him to take over power,” Shettima said.
President Tinubu Dismissed the Claims
Shettima recounted that President Tinubu called him to discuss the allegations but ultimately rejected them as unfounded and inconsistent.
He said Tinubu noted that their political relationship had been built long before the election period and that the claims did not reflect their history.
“He said their story did not add up… when you gave me those clothes, I was an aspirant. I would not have been the candidate, neither were you going to be Vice President,” Shettima recounted.
The Vice President added that Tinubu later wore the outfit in question, dismissing the insinuations surrounding it.
Call for National Unity
Shettima used the opportunity to call on Nigerians to reject divisive narratives and embrace unity, stressing the importance of mutual trust among citizens and leaders.
He urged Nigerians to act as “their brother’s keeper” rather than promoters of political division and mistrust.
