Zuru Youths Unite Behind APC: Every election season brings with it a familiar spectacle of political endorsements, campaign rallies, and promises of a better future. Yet, history has consistently demonstrated that enduring political success is rarely secured through speeches alone. It is often built from the grassroots—within communities where leadership is measured by tangible impact rather than campaign rhetoric.
That reality was evident in the recent gathering of artisans and youths from the Zuru Emirate, where thousands publicly reaffirmed their support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and unveiled the “35,000 Youth for Kaura” initiative.
Far from being another routine political event, the gathering reflected what participants described as a grassroots-driven movement inspired by their assessment of the developmental projects and governance style of Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, popularly known as Kauran Gwandu.
According to the organisers, the initiative is designed not only to mobilise political support but also to strengthen youth participation in governance, community development and civic engagement across the emirate.
A Grassroots Structure Built Around Communities
One of the defining features of the initiative is its organisational structure. Leaders of the movement disclosed that representatives have been appointed across polling units within the Zuru Emirate to coordinate activities, engage residents and strengthen communication between communities and political stakeholders.
The organisers explained that the structure would enable the movement to reach families, artisans, market associations, youths and other grassroots groups more effectively, while also encouraging greater participation in democratic processes.
Political observers note that such community-based mobilisation has increasingly become a significant factor in modern elections, particularly in states where grassroots engagement often determines electoral outcomes more than large campaign events.
Rather than depending solely on conventional political campaigns, the organisers believe sustained interaction with local communities creates stronger public confidence and deeper ownership of government programmes.
Why “35,000 Youth for Kaura”?
Supporters said the name of the initiative symbolises their appreciation for Governor Nasir Idris‘ administration and what they describe as visible improvements in infrastructure, security and youth inclusion since he assumed office.
For many participants, the movement is intended to become a permanent platform through which young people can contribute ideas, participate in public affairs and support programmes aimed at accelerating development across Kebbi State.
Beyond politics, they argue that organised youth participation can strengthen community development, encourage volunteerism and promote constructive engagement between government institutions and the younger generation.
The organisers maintained that the initiative would continue to expand across the emirate while encouraging more young people to participate actively in governance and community-building efforts.
Development Projects Drive Youth Support
Leaders of the “35,000 Youth for Kaura” initiative attributed their endorsement of Governor Nasir Idris to what they described as visible development projects and sustained investments across the Zuru Emirate.
Among the projects highlighted was the ongoing reconstruction of the Zuru–Koko Road, which they said has improved connectivity between communities while creating opportunities for commerce, agriculture and economic activities.
The youths also commended the establishment of a Mobile Police Force barracks and other security interventions across Kebbi South, noting that the increased presence of security personnel has helped restore confidence among residents and encouraged greater social and economic activities.
According to them, government support for security agencies through funding, logistics and operational equipment has strengthened efforts to tackle criminal activities that previously affected several communities within the emirate.
Participants maintained that improved security has enabled farmers to return to their farmlands, traders to conduct business with greater confidence and communities to gradually regain a sense of normalcy.
Youth Inclusion in Governance
Beyond physical infrastructure, members of the association praised Governor Idris for what they described as deliberate efforts to involve young people in governance through appointments into strategic public offices.
They pointed to the appointment of commissioners, special advisers, directors and other public officials drawn from the younger generation as evidence of an administration committed to nurturing future leaders.
According to the group, such appointments have encouraged greater youth participation in governance and demonstrated that competence and commitment can create opportunities for public service.
They argued that empowering young people through leadership positions not only strengthens government institutions but also inspires more youths to contribute positively to the development of Kebbi State.
Government Commends Grassroots Initiative
Responding to the declaration of support, the Kebbi State Commissioner for Information and Culture described the initiative as a reflection of growing public confidence in the developmental programmes of Governor Nasir Idris.
He commended the organisers for promoting peaceful political participation and assured them of continued collaboration in areas that would enhance youth empowerment, economic opportunities and public awareness.
The Commissioner also announced plans for an expanded statewide sensitisation and public enlightenment campaign aimed at keeping citizens informed about government policies, ongoing projects and development programmes.
He stressed that effective communication remains essential in promoting transparency and ensuring that citizens receive accurate information through credible and official channels.
Grassroots Politics and the Future of Democratic Participation
The events in Zuru also reinforce an enduring lesson in democratic governance: meaningful political participation begins at the grassroots. While governments formulate policies and political parties articulate manifestos, it is communities that ultimately determine how those policies are received and sustained.
When artisans, farmers, traders, students and young people actively participate in public affairs, governance becomes more responsive to local realities. Such engagement creates stronger accountability, encourages civic responsibility and deepens public ownership of development initiatives.
Political analysts observe that grassroots organisations increasingly play a crucial role in mobilising voters, promoting civic education and encouraging peaceful participation in elections. Their influence often extends beyond election periods by serving as channels through which citizens communicate their needs and expectations to government.
For the organisers of the “35,000 Youth for Kaura” initiative, the movement represents more than electoral mobilisation. They say it is intended to provide a platform for sustained youth engagement in governance, community development and public advocacy.
A Shared Vision for Development
Supporters of Governor Nasir Idris maintain that the administration’s investments in infrastructure, education, agriculture, healthcare and security have contributed to growing public confidence across different parts of Kebbi State.
They argue that continued collaboration between government institutions, traditional leaders, youth organisations and community groups will be essential in sustaining development gains and addressing emerging socio-economic challenges.
Participants at the gathering expressed optimism that stronger partnerships between citizens and government would accelerate development while promoting peace, unity and inclusive governance throughout the state.
They also encouraged young people to remain actively involved in democratic processes, stressing that responsible civic participation remains one of the most effective ways to contribute to the future of Kebbi State.
Looking Ahead
As political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of future elections, the emergence of organised grassroots movements such as “35,000 Youth for Kaura” highlights the increasing importance of community-based political engagement in Nigeria’s democratic process.
Whether the initiative ultimately translates into electoral success will be determined by voters. However, its emergence demonstrates the continuing relevance of grassroots mobilisation as an important element of democratic participation and political organisation.
For many participants, the ultimate objective extends beyond elections. They believe sustained development, improved security, expanded economic opportunities and greater youth inclusion should remain central to governance in Kebbi State as the state continues its development journey.
